SLS vs. Saturn V, a real time comparison. Saw a comparison yesterday using my video on the left at 50% speed. Here's a proper comparison with both rockets launching at their real speeds. You'll notice SLS is significantly faster off the pad because of the dual massive SRBs!

That’s correct, and the shuttle was the same way. It was often described as “leaping” off the pad, compared with the Saturn V. I still think the Saturn V is more majestic, but that’s just me.

The Saturn V is definitely a tough act to follow. An aesthetic masterpiece on top of being a marvel.

Profilbild von Stan Dyro

@jedi_medic it was massively overengineered according to the aerospace guys I’ve talked to at SpaceX - same with SLS; good for a few short term missions but not maintaining long term space supremacy

Profilbild von RetiredJediMedic
RetiredJediMedicvor 5 Monaten

@nyoomtm Considering the times, I'd say that the Saturn V was engineered just right. Its 100% successful launch record speaks for itself. Massively over engineered? Perhaps, but given its mission, I'd have to say it was worth it.

That’s the problem. One was designed for its purpose, the other under purposed.

@nyoomtm You do know there were several launches of then Saturn V that didn’t have a lunar lander module, right? The inverse of that is true here. This one will when that is part of the mission.

Profilbild von ssilva
ssilvavor 5 Monaten

@nyoomtm Not flying directly but with orbital refueling. As for the Saturn V launches with no lander, they were trials towards it as main goal.

When my oldest son was maybe 8 - 10 we visited NASA and an astronaut giving a kids tour asked if anyone knew why the main shuttle rocket was orange not white. To the astronaut’s and our surprise he raised his hand and gave the right answer!

Yet SLS doesn't have Saturn's lift capacity Orion is so heavy that SLS can't lift it and a lander Which is what you get when you allow Congress to stick its nose into designing a lift vehicle NASA has 595 problems and they're all at First St SE, Washington, DC 2000

The SLS is faster off the pad not because of its dual SRBs, but it's less efficient use of energy. Saturn V's 3 stage design can carry a heavier payload to orbit. Its higher efficiency shows up as slower off pad speed.

What is the Artemis 3 configuration going to look like? Will it be bigger to fit the extra modules for moon landing, extraction from moon, docking and return to earth?

Profilbild von Cameron Schwartz
Cameron Schwartzvor 5 Monaten

As of now Artemis III is no longer a landing mission. Instead, it is a low Earth orbit docking test with one or both of the prototype landers being developed by Blue Origin and SpaceX respectively. Artemis III was originally a landing mission slated for 2028, but with the new mission profile it is targeting mid 2027, with Artemis IV and V potentially happening in 2028. SLS will look mostly the same, but the top of the rocket will be a bit different as it will use ULA's Centaur V as an upper stage rather than the ICPS used on Artemis II.

Smoke of SLS is far massive than SaternV. What was burnt for SLS, not chelothine??

Profilbild von Cameron Schwartz

@Haruhi40_tech SLS uses 2 solid rocket boosters on the side, which create tons of smokey exhaust. The Saturn V was all liquid fuel

I’ve seeen the Apollo launch. It is much more graceful off the pad. The shuttle and the SLS have those solid rocket boosters and leap off the pad. I like the Apollo best for shear beauty and power.

SLS is a political Frankenstein of old tech parts collected from all over the country, stitched together by team DEI at Boeing.

Profilbild von Rocinante

Clearly the Shuttle and SLS astronauts survive this, but what are the G-force comparison between the two?

Profilbild von Cameron Schwartz
Cameron Schwartzvor 5 Monaten

Probably relatively similar. The shuttle’s thrust to weight ratio is only slightly more than SLS, so I’d imagine the acceleration it experienced wasn’t too far off of what we see with SLS.
