Ending the day with a friend by your side — exactly the way life should be. Little Kipekee, our newest rescue, is surrounded and supported sunup to sundown. Today, Nyambeni is her lucky chaperone! Along the way, she has picked up a number of bodyguards - older orphans who have made it their mission to make sure this plucky little girl always has a chaperone. She collapsed the day she was found. Four weeks old, riddled with parasites and fading fast. But today, Kipekee turns one. Her name means 'unique' in Swahili – and she has more than lived up to her name. In this video, taken just a month after her rescue, she was already fighting her way back to life. Now she's the Nursery darling, constantly surrounded by adoring nannies jockeying for her attention. Muridjo, Kerrio, and Nyambeni all competed for custody. Kipekee, drinks her milk under close supervision. Specifically, Muridjo's. She is Kipekee's self-appointed bodyguard, keeping the older bulls at a distance during mud baths and intervening when she squabbles with Daba. She can do this as, like Kipekee, she is freshly fuelled on two bottles of specially formulated milk every three hours, day and night. Wamata used to be the spoilt baby. Now she is blossoming into a caring responsible girl. For months, she was the youngest in our Nairobi Nursery herd – the one the older girls fussed over. Then Kipekee and Daba arrived, smaller and newer, and her role shifted. She has grown into it beautifully, although she still makes sure she is the centre of attention somehow. Case in point: she has worked out if she lies on her side, the younger orphans will clamber on her belly and even her face. Perhaps she'll be a mini-matriach like Kerrio in the making? Round-the-clock care at our Voi Unit saved her leg and, eventually, she grew strong enough to return to the wild. Now Mbirikani is a mother, and her daughter Mica is proof that saving one orphan can create future generations. Donations funded the milk, the Keeper care and the habitat protection that made this possible. With 100 orphans in our care, there is always more milk to mix, and miracles like Mica to be born. A bullet wound brought Serenget to us – found alone in Tsavo West National Park a year ago, hobbling on her left leg. Nearly seven months of stockade rest and repeated treatment by the SWT/KWS Tsavo Mobile Vet Unit followed. In February she walked out to join the herd, making her first two friends by evening. She still takes her milk her own way, letting a Keeper pour it into the tip of her trunk – and today she turns three. Happy birthday, Serenget. All those greens and milk bottles are adding up – we weighed Kaikai this weekend and she registered a very sturdy 172.5 kilograms (380 pounds)! Kaikai is one of the youngest orphans in our care. We rescued her in May 2025, after her mother died of natural causes. It was an uphill battle, but today she is absolutely thriving. Want to support Kaikai’s journey back to the wild?
