SpaceX is 10xing solar power in orbit every few years Here’s the progression for Starlink: • Gen 1 Starlink: ~3,000 satellites generating ~10 MW in orbit • Gen 2 Starlink: ~7,000 satellites generating ~100 MW • Gen 3 Starlink: expected to reach ~1,000 MW - 1 gigawatt of solar power in orbit Starlink was already revolutionary for global internet But the bigger story is that every new generation is also expanding SpaceX’s orbital power infrastructure • More satellites • More bandwidth • More solar power • More capability in orbit This matters because the future is not just satellites for internet It is satellites for communications, sensing, space data networks, and eventually orbital AI compute powered directly by solar SpaceX is not just building Starlink It is building the power and communications backbone for the next era of infrastructure in space

Elon Musk explains how Starlink works? "I think there's several 1000 satellites in low Earth orbit, and they're moving around 25 times the speed of sound in these zipping around the Earth, basically. And they're at an altitude of about 550 kilometers, which is called generally low earth orbit, because they're at low Earth orbit. Their latency is low because the distances is not that far, compared to Geo stationary satellite, 36,000 kilometers. So you've got 1000s of satellites providing low latency, high speed internet throughout the world, and they are interconnected as well. So there are laser links between the satellites. So it forms sort of a laser mesh, so that if, let's say if cables are damaged or cut, like fiber cables, the satellites can communicate between each other and provide connectivity. For example, when the Red Sea cables were cut, I think a few months ago, the Starlink satellite network, continued to function."

Instead of bouncing signals back and forth between Earth stations, the satellites just pass data between themselves up in orbit, which means faster speeds, lower lag, and coverage in the absolute middle of nowhere. SpaceX now has over 10,000 Starlink satellites in orbit (and growing), providing internet data service to every corner of the earth. Even ships at sea or aircraft in the sky can receive high speed internet service. Over 2/3 of the active satellites in orbit are Starlink now. And it won't create any long term trash in orbit. The orbits are so low (480 km to 550 km) that even if SpaceX were to lose control of one, the small satellites will run out of fuel within 5 years. Then they get dragged back into the atmosphere and burn up. Every satellite is in a lane to avoid other Starlink satellites. They all are connected to a collusion avoidance system and can make small course adjustments if needed. Starlink can provide high speed internet anywhere on the planet without having to bury expensive fiber cables underground or undersea. All you need is a small dish which scans the sky for the closest satellite to provide internet connectivity.

Russia starts putting Starlink rival into orbit. A Russian private space company has successfully placed into orbit the first 16 satellites of a planned broadband internet network. This will make targeting of Ukraine so much easier. Russia had recently lost access to Starlink. In a funny twist, the company installing the Russian Starlink is called X-Holding. 😃 If you can’t join them, beat them.
