She expected something comparable to Catherine’s 12 carat sapphire in 18k white gold, surrounded by 14 round cut diamonds totaling 2 carats. She got a basic, 3 carat cushion cut stone that looks occluded or cloudy (unless it’s just always filthy) and the side stones .75 carats each. She has friends married to regular guys with bigger rings-I have NO doubt that she expected a ROCK marrying a British Prince, son of the future King. She likely assumed the Queen would throw all sorts of huge gems at him for her ring, but she assumed wrong. Even Queen Elizabeth’s engagement ring was 3 carats. You have to keep it tasteful, not ostentatious as a Royal with engagement rings which was part of the reason Diana’s was frowned on-the other was that it wasn’t custom.
