Agreed. Inclusion is good on paper, not in practice. "They need to learn social skills" they can do that in a smaller class. My students constantly talk to one another in their smaller class. That's the kind of environment they need.

I teach at an alternative 6-12 school & Ss who had truancy issues at crowded high schools due to anxiety excel with us. We cap at 15/classroom. They are good students but couldn’t handle large populations. Environment matters.

Great observation. I agree completely. As a quiet, reserved learner myself, I would have blossomed in a quieter smaller classroom. Ironically, I went on to become a HS Social Studies teacher. I spent my career making sure all students felt comfortable. Thanks for this post.

I subbed as a para in an Autism classroom in So Cal 10 years ago and was shocked at what the kids were doing academically vs. the neighboring schools w)full inclusion . The stress level was down for everyone & when a meltdown did happen, Ss, staff and materials were safe.

There’s a freakishly innovative private school (tuition is state funded for IEP kids) in Utah that is an OUTDOOR academic program for kids with miraculous results. They hold class in parks, forests, mountains, universities, libraries, rec centers, lakes, deserts, business and farms. The children THRIVE in every way after years struggling in government schools with ADHD, ASD, anxiety and autism. Mothers cry when filming testimonials about how BreakOut School has saved their kids. Small class sizes are better for ALL students. One of the reasons home schooling is so effective.

Inclusion is a lose-lose-lose. I've worked in countless schools and grade levels, it's bad for the Tier 1 students, the teacher and the SPED students. I think this is the #1 reason teachers are leaving education.

It's not just class size. It's distractions like talking, moving around the room, etc. Some kids just need to be able to focus and struggle to do so.
