Space robotics startup GITAI is developing robots to help humans build a lunar base. In March 2023, they demonstrated this in a simulated lunar environment using robotic rovers and inchworm arms. The robots successfully handled tasks like mining, installing solar panels, placing antennas, welding, transporting modules, and even repairing themselves.

Japanese startup GITAI has developed a lunar robotic rover called R1 for exploration, mining, and maintenance work on the Moon. The rover successfully completed testing at JAXA’s Mock Lunar Surface Environment. R1 features dual robotic arms and demonstrated driving, obstacle clearance, and solar panel assembly during the tests, which were conducted in 2021.

Robots on solar farms! ☀️ These Luminous robots assist in constructing solar farms, minimizing the need for manual handling of heavy parts. To reduce transport damage, module manufacturers are now using a "vertically stacked" standard, but this makes automation more complex. But these robots can still handle them! 🦾 Since large-format modules are heavy and long, robotic arms must handle the weight, balance the load, and move safely while avoiding collisions and external forces like wind.

China’s pace of solar panel installation is extremely fast. 🇨🇳 So, at peak times, China has been installing on the order of ~100 panels per second. That’s a lot of repetitive work to be done. Robots are now handling the solar panels, making installation faster, safer, making installations faster, safer, and hands-free. Operators can focus on wiring and more technical demanding tasks. The placing process is delegated to robots, who can do it without getting exhausted. Due to safety reasons, I think that these applications still require a human-operator to be in the loop. The system includes a handheld version for humans and a motorized version for robots, both using the same design and sensors. Brain-controlled exoskeletons to train humanoid robots! 🧠 Fourier just presented human tele-operators using brain control interfaces and exoskeletal arms to train humanoid robots on home tasks. The brain control interface is the interesting part. Instead of using a controller or joystick to teleoperate, the operator's movements and intentions are captured more naturally through the exoskeleton and BCI. This means the demonstrations are more fluid, more human-like, and better suited for training robots to perform delicate home tasks. Multiple tele-operators are simultaneously generating training data across multiple robots. This is how you build the dataset needed for eventual full autonomy, without waiting years for it to arrive. This might be the bridge between "robots that work in controlled environments" and "robots that work in homes." Unlike most conventional arms, it can also move smoothly through singularity positions, where many robots lose control or need complex workarounds. That matters more than it sounds. Singularity limits often prevent standard industrial robots from handling certain tasks. Solving it could unlock more advanced automation in tighter, more demanding spaces.
