Spanish company Vortex Bladeless is developing a new way to generate wind energy without blades or a spinning rotor. Its cylindrical mast oscillates in the wind, and an electromagnetic generator converts this motion into electricity. With low maintenance and no rotating blades, the technology could be useful in urban... show more

Who knew? A metal version of the wacky wavy inflatable fun Guys could generate energy. I’ll be damned.

I hope they name that company WINDICKS

I have my doubts about the durability of a wiggling generator dildo.

The wind turbine industry saw inflatable tube men and took notes

Coolest thing I’ve seen in awhile with applications to low power soft robotics

yess. cause nothing screams durability, and low maintenance, like something that vibrates intensely in the wind

Every farmer worth his salt will put two bails of hay at the base of those things.

Ok vro... And next you're going to tell me that they plan to add two spherical battery packs at the bottom to make the look complete

I bet it hardly makes any power at all.

Bet an entire field of those would be stunning. 😹

I bet it can only power a smartphone

And we only need 7854 of them to power one home. Amazing.

So great, instead of endless fields of giant windmills, we'll have giant fields of waving dildos.

some of the best ideas start with “what if we just stopped doing it the usual way?”

They should have put arms on it. C'mon.

Now if they just make it out of diamonds, we can solve the energy crisis and do advertising for tax and mattress companies!

Neat idea, but bendy things tend to fatigue at it's bendier points & then they all fall down!!!🤔🤦♂️

Wind turbines are ugly enough, imagine fields of this...psychotic...

Keep trying, you are on the right path to inventing the tree

@grok how efficient is it? I guess uses natural resonances - what are those resonances (what frequencies)? Estimate cost of maintenance and energy generation

Oh, curious, my girlfriend has the same wind generator in small. Maybe just as a demonstrator or so ...

why make it so aerodynamic? wouldn't it generate more movement if it had little concave divots or something?

This does not suggest low maintenance to me, rather metal fatigue.

Things have stalled a bit, to be honest, but we don't know why; a company like @Repsol poured a lot of money into it, yet there has been little progress on the project. @VortexBladeless
