Location: Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh Date: 4 January Authorities carried out a demolition drive against two mosques and one madrasa, alleging that the structures had been built through illegal encroachment on government land. The operation was conducted under heavy police deployment and drone surveillance to maintain law and order. The District Magistrate (DM) was present at the site during the drive and later allotted land to 20 selected beneficiaries. According to the DM, a total fine of ₹58 lakh was imposed in connection with the illegal encroachments, out of which ₹8.78 lakh was levied on the mosque’s cleric (mutawalli).

Khoda, Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh: The person in charge of Madrasa Rahmania Arabia Qasim-ul-Uloom stated that when the authorities arrived to seal the madrasa, they tried to show the relevant documents. However, the documents were kept in the madrasa’s locker, and they were not allowed to go inside to retrieve them. He further said that during the sealing, children were present inside the madrasa, most of whom belong to poor families and are orphans. According to eyewitnesses, when the madrasa was being sealed, the children were crying and screaming because they had no way to get out. Despite this, the administrative officials closed the gate and sealed the premises.

Yesterday, we removed illegal structures attached to a church building in Small Street during our by-law enforcement operation. Today, we returned to investigate what was happening inside the building and discovered that shops were operating from the church basement. This demonstrates the level of lawlessness and illegal occupation taking place in parts of our inner city. We will continue to act decisively to enforce by-laws, restore order, and reclaim Johannesburg precinct by precinct. No space in our city can be allowed to operate outside the law.
