Michael Pollan says the origin of consciousness is with feelings, not thoughts. Not the cortex where reasoning happens, but the brainstem where a living body regulates itself against the world. Consciousness may arise from friction with reality. Today’s AI processes information. It does not regulate a vulnerable body with metabolic needs. If feeling is foundational, computation alone may never be enough.

Joscha Bach says consciousness is not a mysterious extra ingredient. It is a model of what it would be like if you existed. The self is virtual by definition. It can only run inside a system capable of simulation. This does not make it less real. It makes it substrate-dependent in exactly the way software is. The hard problem may not be hard. It may be a category error about where to look.

Nick Bostrom says if we create ASI, we might be introducing it to a universe already full of gods. If superintelligence already exists across galaxies, quantum branches, or simulations, we'd be birthing a mind to join that cosmic host.
