🛠️ This carpenter is fixing a bent truss with gaps on a house and the way he’s doing it is pretty wild. He’s shaking a bit, and literally hooking one leg around a beam to hold himself up instead of using a ladder (which is why I think he’s shaking). He walks through the fixes: places a nail so his hammer has something to grab onto and to pull the board flush, pencil to check if it’s flush, then uses a lag + impact driver to pull the boards together and then he nails it all into place. I’m not a carpenter, but I’m wondering — is this actually the correct (and safest) way to fix something like this? Have you ever had to fix a bent board or truss? This was important at Ancient Egyptians who “felt that it was unnatural for it to decay, and that there must be some important reason why bodies did not decay, but retained their hair and skin, and continued to be recognizable for many years after death.” Unfortunately, over time natural mummies would be dug up for jewelry or other valuables that were buried with mummy. Around 5500 years ago, Egyptians started to bury their dead in large baskets or wooden boxes. They would also bury dead in underground tombs with stone floors. With these changes Egyptians found that mummies taken away from heat of desert sand were not as well preserved and bodies started to decay. This was not acceptable because of high value placed on mummy preservation and after trial and error they eventually discovered a process to better prevent decay. Mummies found with new method of mummification of linen and plaster or natron, are dated back to Old Kingdom (2650-2150 BC). Body of deceased would be wrapped in many strips of linen as possible. Great care would be taken to wrap individual fingers and toes separately, as to try and keep the integrity of human form. In some cases, mummies have been found with prosthesis for legs or arms under linen wrappings to help maintain the shape of the human likeness. After wrapping was completed, a plaster or gesso would be carefully smoothed over body over linen to further smooth and complete human shape. Plaster over face could be further modeled to resemble former person if they had a moustache or prominent eyes. Method of linen and plaster or gesso hardened over mummy is called cartonnage, and this method of mummification continued until beginning of Christian era. Natron is actually a natural type of salt that is found in Egypt. It’s chemical composition consists of a sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and sodium carbonate (washing soda) and sodium chloride (table salt). Interestingly, sodium’s chemical true name is Natrium in our present periodic table. In mummification process, natron was used to basically salt and preserve body. Body would be placed on a special table and dissected open, and natron would be place inside body cavity. Saw this clip of Punch Kun from June 6 and it honestly felt painful to me 🥺 Punch sitting quietly on the ground, watching newborn babies playing all over his favorite cage. He keeps staring at them but doesn’t dare go up. He knows what might happen if mom gets angry. That spot was his throne, his happy place… and now it’s been taken over. You can see in his eyes how badly he wants to climb up and join them, but he’s holding himself back. It hurts watching him like this. Hope it won’t be long before he’s allowed to hang out with the kids and doesn’t feel left out anymore ❤️ Your perspective might be different, but for me… poor Punch is going through it. Why did I move to El Salvador? Very simple. Literally my purpose in life is to uphold my responsibility as a father and cultivate the best possible future for my children, using the knowledge and resources available to me. To some people, that means stocking up on ammo and having lots of Bitcoin for the inevitable end of the world. But me, I prefer going down the path of lesser resistance. Why 🇸🇻 ? I see hope here. I see actual problems being solved for real people. I see a government with a low-time preference looking towards the future. I came here with the intention to build something beyond the scope of my own desire... and the results in only 3 months are literally palpable. The opportunity is fertile. Meanwhile, I've watched my home country/culture deteriorate over the last 15 years, along with much of the Europe I fell in love with as a young adult. I don't see hope there. I don't think I ever did. But El Salvador is a place visualizing a bright future and taking the steps to create it. I don't have to generate that hope & optimism, because it permeates the air here. I obviously don't know what the future holds. But in this place, in this moment, where women can feel safe walking around at night, the hardest money in the known universe is legal tender, and a shared air of optimism that is all but clinically contagious, I can't say I'd be doing my job well as a father if I didn't at least 𝘵𝘳𝘺 to make things work here right now. End rant.
