By setting the club behind the ball, he effectively started part of the backswing before the swing even began. That meant less movement, fewer moving parts, and an easier path back to impact. With the announcement of Tiger Woods’ 7th back operation, I have to ask — is the modern golf swing setting up an entire generation of golfers for injury? That style with the feet planted, the vertical jump, and steep shoulders puts tremendous strain on the lower back. I know, because years ago I tried to “drop it under” like the modern pros — and it nearly ended my game. So, we simplified his take away with the help of an alignment stick as feedback How you start the swing will influence the rest: Josh would whip it inside and then up high making it very difficult to pivot the body well and deliver the club from a good place. We got Josh to stop at waist height as a check point and then feel a good pivot to the top where his arms were a little flatter. A flexed (bowed) lead wrist is a swing style. It only suits a few, we only see it on a few. Within it there are different club face positions too with DJ and Rham opposite ends of the spectrum. It requires precise and intricate match-ups. I’m see most people who try it, get the club behind them to early or “react” to the face not “match up”. Many internet-gurus would have you believe that all you need to do is flex your wrist, shift and spin and you’ll be amazing. For the majority that’s totally not the case. Swing your own swing and don’t follow fashion. Golf historically has trends (drive your knees-Nicklaus’s, Stack n tilt etc). All have merit but they are not the only way to do it and often don’t work for the majority. Swing your own swing and don’t follow the sheep. 🐑

Today, most golfers keep both feet firmly planted on the ground throughout the swing. For me, that makes it much harder to make a full turn, develop a natural rhythm, and generate effortless power. The classic swing allowed the greats to move freely, create speed, and play for decades.
