Metal Slug 4 often gets a lot of criticism, but if you look at it separately from Metal Slug 1–3, it’s not actually a bad game. The stylish BGM that starts right from Stage 1 is excellent, and the Double Heavy Machine Gun was a really cool addition. That said, the biggest drawback is that the game feels very familiar—almost like you’ve seen it all before—which is hard to ignore while playing. In Korea, it was released around the time when arcades were disappearing due to the rise of PC cafe, so not many people actually had the chance to experience this game back then.

After Metal Slug 2, the reason X came out before 3 was because Metal Slug 2 had serious optimization issues, causing heavy slowdown during gameplay. So SNK decided to release an optimized version based on Metal Slug 2 first. That said, it wasn’t exactly the same game. They changed things like switching between daytime and nighttime backgrounds to create a different atmosphere, and even brought in some weapons that would later appear in Metal Slug 3. The controls were also improved, showing that a lot of care went into refining the experience. When you actually play it, you can clearly feel that the slowdown is significantly reduced compared to Metal Slug 2. Because of that, Metal Slug X became a very popular title alongside Metal Slug 3.

As a result, there’s a noticeable difference in quality between the early and later stages. When the company went bankrupt, most of the core developers moved to SNK, where they went on to create Metal Slug. That’s why playing GunForce II feels so much like playing Metal Slug. Many of the series’ signature elements were already there—an impressive variety of weapons and vehicles, gorgeous pixel art, and spectacular large-scale boss battles. Without GunForce II, it’s hard to imagine Metal Slug becoming the legendary game it is today. Like its predecessor, GunForce II was never ported to home consoles and wasn’t widely distributed in arcades, so it remained relatively unknown for many years. Fortunately, it was finally re-released a few years ago as part of the Irem Collection, giving this hidden gem the recognition it deserved.

Metal Slug 6 was released during the series’ 10th anniversary year. It was also the first Metal Slug game to move beyond the Neo Geo platform and launch on the Atomiswave system. Since it came out during a period when the arcade market was already in decline, not many people seem to remember this title today. While the graphics did improve with the platform change, it doesn’t quite capture the finely crafted pixel art style that made Metal Slug 2 and 3 so memorable. In particular, the high-resolution backgrounds can feel a bit awkward because they don’t always blend naturally with the lower-resolution character sprites. The game also introduced Clark and Ralf as playable characters, along with unique special abilities for each character. A new weapon switching system was added as well, allowing players to carry and swap between two weapons. Another feature I thought was a good idea was Easy Mode, where you start with a Heavy Machine Gun by default, although you can’t access the Final Mission. It felt like a nice addition for more casual players.

Pepsiman wasn't a promotional mini-game hidden on a demo disc. It was a full retail PlayStation release built around Pepsi's Japanese mascot. Between levels, players are treated to live-action cutscenes starring an American man in a Pepsi-themed room who spends the entire game drinking Pepsi and talking directly to the camera. Somehow, this was approved by multiple layers of management and shipped.

One of the biggest differences from Metal Slug is its combination of 2D characters and 3D backgrounds, which blend together surprisingly well without feeling out of place. As for the soundtrack, this might just be my impression, but it feels like it borrowed a lot of the spirit of Metal Slug. Unlike Metal Slug, Dolphin Blue has a much brighter and more cheerful atmosphere, and the music fits the game perfectly. The gameplay is fast-paced and fun, but after a short while the difficulty spikes dramatically, and there are quite a few sections where the game slows down, which can hurt the overall experience. Unfortunately, it wasn’t commonly seen in arcades and was never ported to home consoles, so most people have probably never heard of it. It’s a solid game with a lot of charm, which makes it all the more disappointing that it never got the recognition it deserved.
