@thisisinsider at the same time govt must stop one time plastics side by side. still we r having access to plastic carry bag in shops. u can have a surprise visit to any shop in tamilnadu, u can find it. if we need sustainable, the we must act holistically. just one side reform is not enough.

California’s new packaging law recently went into effect and farmers are saying they won’t be able to adapt and food will end up being wasted or spoiling The law is SB 54, ‘The Plastic Pollution Prevention and Packaging Producer Responsibility Act’ “Groceries in California are about to get more expensive, and in some cases, your favorite fresh produce may not be there at all. — For fresh produce, packaging isn't optional. Plastic helps keep food safe, fresh, and from going to waste — Look, we all want more sustainable packaging, but for everyday items like berries, bagged salads, ready-to-eat produce, there aren't real scalable alternatives yet. And it could take 5 to 10 years to get there, or longer” “So when mandates move faster than technology, prices go up, shelf life drops, and some products just won't pencil out” Here’s what the new law mandates, SB 54 Requires by 2032: - 25% reduction in single-use plastic packaging and food service ware by weight - 100% of single-use packaging and plastic food service ware must be recyclable or compostable. - 65% recycling rate for the remaining single-use plastic packaging Producers, brands, manufacturers must join a Producer Responsibility Organization and pay fees. This tiny soy sauce fish might be one of the smartest sustainability upgrades I’ve seen in packaging lately. It looks small, but the design thinking behind it is anything but. After five years of development, Heliograf created a soy sauce container made from sugarcane bagasse that breaks down in home compost in just 6 weeks. That means a familiar single use format now has a far better ending. What makes this so strong is that it keeps the fish shaped design people already know and the squeeze function they expect. But it improves the experience with a larger 12mL capacity, solving one of the biggest annoyances of the original plastic version. The smartest part is that this is not just a material swap. Restaurants can fill the soy sauce on site, which can mean fresher product and less transport related waste. That is what good sustainable packaging looks like. It does not only reduce harm, it improves the system and the user experience at the same time. Since 2020, Heliograf has reportedly helped eliminate over 32 tonnes of ocean plastic, or about 32 million plastic soy sauce fish. Production at Zimbabwe’s DINSON plant began in 2024. It’s not yet making the full range of steel products, with exports currently mostly primary products; pig iron and steel billets. But the company is ramping up to reach 600,000 tonnes a year, so that it makes more of the products used in construction and mining. In 2025, Zim steel exports grew to US$92.1 million from 146,314 metric tonnes sold. This was a 450% jump in value from 2024, when 80,476 metric tonnes were sold for US$16.7 million.
