Yesterday marked the 8th anniversary of the Khan Shaykhun chemical attack by the Assad regime. The Khan Shaykhun massacre resulted in 89–100+ deaths and 300–541 injuries, mostly young children and babies. This was not an isolated incident; there had been previous chemical attacks in Syria by the Assad regime, including the deadly Ghouta chemical attack in 2013, which also used sarin gas, leading to the death of 1,500 civilians, including children. Documented footage of the chemical attack on Khan Shaykhun, April 4, 2017.

August 6, 1945 On this day 81 years ago, the B-29 Enola Gay dropped the uranium gun-type atomic bomb “Little Boy” on Hiroshima, Japan — the first nuclear weapon ever used in combat. Navy Captain William S. “Deak” Parsons armed the bomb in flight. He crawled into the bomb bay after takeoff from Tinian and completed the final assembly by flashlight because of the real risk that a crash on takeoff could detonate it and destroy the entire base. The weapon exploded at approximately 1,900 feet over the city. History.

The first-ever use of an atomic weapon, the attack killed an estimated 140,000 people in all, most of whom were civilians. On August 9, the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Nagasaki. Some 40,000 people, again mostly civilians, died instantly. Another 34,000 died in the weeks that followed. What was the role of the British Army in Northern Ireland? One of bravery, of sacrifice and of defending so many in the most difficult of times. What an example this evening as we marked the 55th Anniversary of the murder of Captain David Stewardson, aged 29 of the Royal Army Ordnance Corps by terrorists on the 9th September 1971 Captain Stewardson was a bomb disposal team member and was killed by an IRA terrorist bomb, he was attempting to defuse the bomb when it exploded outside Castlerobin Orange hall. Capt Stewardson had been in Northern Ireland for only 10 days. As Capt. Stewardson tried to cut into the package, the bomb exploded. This type of bomb was a new development and was christened by the bomb disposal teams as a "Castlerobin". Capt Stewardson wasn’t the only bomb disposal solider killed - there were 23 during Operation Banner, all killed trying to protect others. We should always remember their sacrifice, and never allow it to be besmirched.
