#Syria: 10 years ago, besieged Rebels in Daraya (S. #Damascus suburb) launched the "Flames of Daraya" (#لهيب_داريا) Offensive. It triggered one of the fiercest battles the area had ever witnessed, lasting over a month. Rebels hoped to lift the siege by capturing the strategic Jaamayat area (see map) near the National Hospital to link their pocket with Moadamiyeh suburb. Other goals included weakening Regime near Mazzeh Airbase and relieving pressure on Zabadani, which at the time was facing a combined Regime-Hezbollah offensive. It was an urban battle - arguably one of the most difficult in warfare - involving building-to-building fighting and facing constant sniper threats from multi-storey buildings. Evacuating the wounded was also a nightmare and medical supplies were reduced. Using tunnels and basements, Rebels surprised Regime and infiltrated several positions at the start of the assault. This allowed Rebels to advance and seize a number of buildings in the first days before arrival of reinforcements. They still had enough fuel and ammunition to use, even if sparingly, a T-72. Rebels announced they had killed 70 Regime fighters during the first 3 days. While Rebels didn’t manage to link up (on the ground) with Moadamiyeh, they took control of most of the Jaamiyat area. Regime resorted to massive firepower and launched a counter-offensive. Incendiary weapons were also used, signaling Regime suffered a significant setback. Despite their overwhelming firepower, Assad's forces needed weeks to regain the positions lost in early August. Hundreds of airstrikes and barrel bombs were launched until late September. Rebels achieved multiple goals: they seized many weapons, inflicted significant losses and showed they were still capable of offensive operations - an important morale boost while living under devastating siege conditions. Rebels' resistance in Daraya lasted one more year before the final evacuation.
