I do think that it could work if prior to his impresionment he was better at masking but was generally the same inside, with his imprisionment causing him to lose practice with acting "normal", like he does in the book.

In my eyes, Post Canto 10 Meursault is more someone who still has that constant poker face, but now just shows a bit more emotion. He’ll smile and allow himself to find meaning in things. His voice will have slightly more emotion, because he’s a bit more content with himself.

I don't Meursault is going to change outwordly that much but I do think the change that will happen is the face he's going to actualy initiate conversations with others instead of being the passive and waiting to be asked.
