Analogue paneer (paneer made with palm oil) is spreading across India, and here are 3 simple tests to find out if your paneer is real or not! 1) 𝐃𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭: boil paneer, add toor dal, and wait for 10 minutes. If the water turns red, urea may be present in your paneer. 2) 𝐋𝐚𝐛𝐞𝐥 𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭: the ingredient list of analogue paneer will have “starch” and “palm/vegetable oil” written. 3) 𝐈𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭: Put a few drops of iodine on the paneer. If it turns blue, it is analogue paneer. Analogue paneer is around 210 Rs. per kg whereas real paneer can go up to 450 Rs. per kg. Maharashtra restaurants will be heavily fined if they miss mentioning this on their menus! India’s restaurants and street vendors are filled with analogue paneer, since it is cheaper. Last year I did a lab test for 10 paneers. I chose branded, dairy, restaurant and street paneers. All of the restaurant and street paneer failed in the test, and were analogue paneer. Real paneer is made from milk but analogue paneer is often made using vegetable oil and starch, which has much lower protein. I think every state in India should adopt this rule, not just Maharashtra! Let’s Make India Healthy Again!

FBOs are procuring Cheese Analogue from manufacturers and from states such as Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh, and selling it as paneer. The same product is often marketed under misleading labels like “Low Fat Paneer”, “Medium Fat Paneer”, or “Fresh Paneer”, or sold without manufacturing details, batch number, or expiry date. In some cases, FBOs unknowingly order paneer but are supplied Cheese Analogue as a substitute. Manufacturers supply these products with labels declaring “Cheese Analogue” and disclaimers such as “not responsible for loose sale” and “contains no dairy fat”; however, at the retail level, FBOs misrepresent or knowingly sell them as paneer to increase profits. It is also observed that some manufacturers and retail shop owners are operating without valid FSSAI licenses. Certain FBOs are procuring Cheese Analogue in bulk and repacking it under misleading labels such as “Premium Paneer” without licence, proper declaration, or traceability. Inspections have revealed adulteration practices including addition of starch, excess water, non-milk fats, use of poor-quality or synthetic milk, and non-food-grade substances, along with violations such as absence of mandatory labelling, invalid licences, and unhygienic storage. Seizure of Adulterated and Misbranded Products: During raids conducted yesterday, approximately 45 outlets and 8 manufacturing units were inspected, and about 825 kg of suspected adulterated/misbranded products were seized. These practices pose serious health risks including food poisoning, allergic reactions, and consumption of inferior and unsafe products. Strict enforcement drives are ongoing, and samples are being collected for analysis. Violations will attract stringent legal action. Public Advisory: Purchase paneer only from licensed vendors, check labels and expiry details, avoid loose/unlabelled products, and report violations. Warning to FBOs: Ensure proper declaration of Cheese Analogue, maintain mandatory labelling and valid licences, and avoid repacking or selling analogue as paneer; violations will invite strict legal action. This isn’t just food adulteration - this is an organized public health disaster. A raid in Surat’s Pandesara area led to the seizure of around 1400 kg of suspected paneer. Laboratory tests confirmed the presence of vegetable oil mixed with industrial acids - substances that have no place in food. This wasn’t a one-off operation. For the past 2 years, nearly 400 kg of paneer was being produced daily and supplied to dairies, hotels, restaurants, and caterers. What makes it worse? The operator held an FSSAI license registered in Vasai, but was running this illegal manufacturing unit in Surat. Think about it - what people believed was paneer was actually a toxic mix. And what is the system focused on? Filing FIRs against those who are exposing such issues. As long as adulterators operate freely and whistleblowers are targeted, this poison will keep circulating in the market. This is not negligence - this is a direct threat to public health.
