In this video, I'll explain my theory: Tesla is actually launching a new, shorter wheelbase Model Y. By doing so, I think Tesla can cut $6-8K off the price (smaller battery, no sunroof, fewer luxury features) and open up a larger addressable market. This would give Tesla THREE Model Y variants (ie., iPhone lineup of Standard, Pro, Pro Max: • Model Y S (Short) - Shorter, fewer features • Model Y (Standard) - Current version we all know • Model Y L (Long) - 6 seats, premium features, higher price This is just speculation on my part, so I could be wrong. NEWS: The Tesla Model Y and Model 3 have received Euro NCAP's Best in Class award for safety. “Model Y proved the gold standard for small SUVs, specifically excelling in Child Occupant protection and Safety Assist tests,” Euro NCAP said. "The updated Tesla Model 3 remains a leader in safety. The electric family car achieved high scores across the board and particularly impressed in Child Occupant protection. Its Safety Assist score shows Tesla's continued improvement of driver assistance safety features," they added. Model 3 is the safest Large Family Car, while the Model Y is the safest Small SUV.

GOOD NEWS ⚙️ During the launch event, Tesla Semi program lead Dan Priestley and Tesla engineering executive Lars Moravy said that Tesla has extensively redesigned the Semi’s drivetrain for volume production 🔥 The original Plaid-derived motor used a carbon-fiber-sleeved rotor, but Tesla replaced it with a steel-caged design intended to be cheaper, lighter, more efficient and more reliable. A stator shared with Cybertruck also allows Tesla to reuse an existing design and production line. Altogether, the redesigned drive axle is approximately 80 kg lighter. Tesla also replaced hydraulic steering with a fully redundant electric steer-by-wire system based on Cybertruck technology. Tesla says it eliminates hydraulic losses and leaks, makes the truck autonomous-ready and delivers exceptionally fast, precise steering. Combined with precise throttle control and greater wheel cut, it gives the Semi a turning radius reportedly close to a Model Y—making it easier to maneuver in cities and loading docks.

Video of my first drive impressions of the Tesla Model Y L Premium Long Wheelbase. It has adaptive damping that noticeably improves ride comfort on bad roads versus the shorter Model Y Premium (LA is a great place to test this lol). While the new Model Y Performance also has adaptive damping, that is tuned more for sportiness. The Y L dampening is tuned for comfort, and even on the 20" Uberhelix wheels, it soaks up the bumps really well. The Model Y L also benefits from updates to Tesla's adaptive system controls, which improve the accuracy and latency of their actuator control. The Model Y L doesn't feel all that noticeably larger than the Model Y while driving it, but what is immediately noticeable is the improved rear view out the back window from the review mirror. Due to the shape of the glass and the rear, you get a taller, more expansive view. It's very quiet in every row, and the Y L even features improvements in this area versus the current Model Y. There is a new "Rear Comfort" setting that is exclusive to the Model Y L. Basically what that does is it prioritizes ride comfort for second and third rows over optimal steering and handling and first row comfort. My wife said it was her favorite second-row experience of any Tesla she's ever been in (which is all of them). The Model Y L just feels really refined overall. The driving dynamics, sound dampening, suspension, FSD, etc, it all just feels really dialed in, and I think when you test drive it, you will agree. As for FSD, I got to try FSD V14.3.7, and it's as you'd expect: amazing. I'm going to post a couple separate dedicated FSD videos later today.

UP driver Craig Coker hit Laguna Seca in the 2024 Tesla Model 3 Performance for the first time for testing and baseline lap times as we continue to develop for the platform. We are very pleased with the results. Craig ran a 1:35.07 on DOT street tires in the new car, compared to his best lap on the previous gen Model 3, which was 1:35.7 and that was with a full Ascension-R build and on slicks. More than 1/2 second faster in the new car with no aero mods, less tire, full interior, and using factory Track Mode with no 3rd party boxes. This is a true representation of a modded daily driver with the factory drivetrain/battery warranty intact. Can’t wait to go back and drop that time even further!
