I was a Calvinist for 15 years. After getting into the content of Dr. Michael Heiser, I really started to reflect on what I believed and completely abandoned Calvinism. It’s just dumb and incongruent. It refuses itself.

The problem with famous theologians is it's too costly to change their mind when they have a brand and audience they have to maintain. If he had noticed this verse earlier in his life he could have incorporated it into his theology but now he's forced to ignore it.

Most people read a system into the text instead of just believing what it says.

You’re building a theology around Matthew 23:37 as if it undermines the sovereignty of God. But it doesn’t. When Jesus weeps over Jerusalem, He’s pronouncing judgment. He’s lamenting their rebellion, not His failure. The context is covenantal indictment. Yes, Christ says, “How often I wanted to gather your children… and you were unwilling.” But notice: it’s their children He longed to gather, and their leaders who were unwilling. He’s not saying His eternal redemptive will was thwarted. He’s saying their hard hearts rejected the prophets and now judgment is coming (v. 38: “Behold, your house is left to you desolate”). You interpret this through the lens of libertarian autonomy. Scripture doesn’t. The same Jesus who weeps over Jerusalem also says, “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him” (John 6:44). You can’t affirm both without redefining grace. Romans 9 answers your whole system. If human will or exertion played the decisive role, then God’s mercy would be contingent, earned by choice. But the Spirit says: “So then it does not depend on the one who wills or the one who runs, but on God who has mercy” (Rom. 9:16). Your view puts man’s decision at the center. The gospel puts God’s mercy there. If your theology allows man to frustrate God’s purpose, it’s not biblical.

While they were not willing, that doesn’t explain why they weren’t willing. We are told that it’s because God hardened their hearts, blinding them to see the truth.

There are times in which God hardens their hearts but he does so for a stated reason (continued rebellion in the face of God merciful long-suffering) and it’s not an inherent condition from birth—which is why it contradicts the T of the Calvinistic tulip.
