Cold War era waters donโ€™t play around. And when you consider the fact that this tower is 300 feet from the ocean with salt spray corroding it itโ€™s even more amazing. I used to live 3 miles from the beach and my gas grill would disintegrate to pieces every year.

It was far enough away from the blast area but I'll bet dollars to donuts that it still took damage. LC-36 will take a couple of years to be back up and running. This is catastrophic for blue origin and new glenn since they do not have a secondary launch facility for that rocket.

The tower was chard to bits. Look back at the damage video from the pad and it suffered significant damage to the piping and also the shockwave likely did internal damage inside.

It being full probably helped it dampen a lot of the shock loads

The mass of the water resisted the explosive shockwave very well...

So is it a "sturdy-ass water tower" or a "sturdy ass-water tower?"

The flame on the torch is blown out by the pressure wave, but re-ignites when the fireball arrives.
