WE GOT DATA! Check out this first-ever 3-D data set of wind and thermodynamics from the ground up from inside a #tornado! With a peak wind of 131 mph measured above ground, and greater than 115 mph at ground level outside of suction vortices, it appears this tornado was at least an EF2. This data set sheds light on the 3-D structure of the dynamic pipe from ground through the vent, showing a high swirl ratio tornado here. The vent is the powerful updraft at the upper reaches of the dynamic pipe, the strength of which is proportional to the ceiling of the tornado cyclone below. We also computed a pressure perturbation with height, with two maximum deficits happening at launch and farther above ground in the dynamic pipe. Notice the little loop the parachute probe made at the backside of the #tornado at the same time as an RH decrease. We do not believe this is a subvortex here so far above ground. In conditions like this we are generally looking at a CAT Ill Instrument Landing System approach where the pilots are essentially acting as systems managers monitoring the autopilot as it tracks the localizer and glideslope signals down to the runway. The intense scattering of the landing lights shows just how saturated the air mass is which forces the crew to rely almost entirely on the radio altimeter for vertical awareness since visual references are practically nonexistent until the last few seconds. The German Luftwaffe used a high-tech ground simulator during WWII called the "Bombenteppich" (Bomb Carpet). Instead of flying, student bombardiers stood on a raised platform above a giant, mechanically driven conveyor belt painted with target terrain. The belt moved at the exact apparent ground speed of a combat aircraft. Cadets used real bombsights to track targets, calculate drift, and trigger mock releases. They weren't allowed to drop live ammunition from real planes until they mastered this moving map simulator.

Check out the incredible hook-shaped trench from the violent suction vortex that slammed the Dominator 3. It almost appears as if the launch/Dominator barrier/gap in the terrain intensified the vortex on approach to the vehicle. The vortex hit the front of the vehicle with the anemometer in back measuring 132 mph northerlies. The suction vortex was moving at 62 mph, with 124 mph of shear from the back to the front of the Dominator 3 causing it to spin while in park. New milestone achieved! The #Airbus U850 #SIRTAP has successfully completed its first taxi at the Ejército del Aire y del Espacio Getafe Air Base runway, right next to our facilities. During this taxi test, the aircraft is fully controlled from the ground control station. The test verifies the correct integration and performance of the braking system, steering function, navigation sensors, and commands from the control station itself. Why is this key? It confirms the seamless interaction between hardware, software, and vehicle dynamics. It also validates the aircraft's ability to maneuver safely on the ground before progressing to high-speed taxi trials and the subsequent flight test campaign. We are one step closer to the first flight! Stay tuned.

A couple of weeks ago the NTSB issued an update on the UPS MD11 crash and I wanted to use the graphs of flight data in a visualization combined with the ADS-B data and surveilance videos. This is what I ended up with, one hard part about this is the flight is so close to the ground the viewpoint needs to account for the pitch of the aircraft raising and lowering the cockpit.

On July 19, 2021, a Cessna 180 was involved in an accident during a takeoff attempt from a rough field near Brenham, Texas. The pilot had previously landed short of the runway due to fuel exhaustion and refueled the aircraft with fuel purchased from a landowner. The pilot then attempted a downhill takeoff from the rough terrain. Witness video showed the airplane bounce multiple times during the ground roll, briefly becoming airborne before settling back onto the field. The airplane then pitched up, struck a barbed wire fence, climbed slightly, and descended while veering left before colliding with terrain. The aircraft sustained substantial damage to the left wing and horizontal stabilizers. The pilot was not injured.
