IMF on ZiG: “What we’d like to see is the ZiG fully becoming a national currency, in the sense that it’s not only stable, but also widely used” IMF’s Wojciech Maliszewski says Zimbabwe needs deeper fiscal reforms to support the ZiG, which remains overshadowed by the USD despite Govt plans to make it the sole currency by 2030. The IMF is discussing a staff monitored programme (SMP) in Zimbabwe. This is when a country agrees to a set of economic policies monitored by IMF staff. The SMP doesn’t come with new IMF loans, but is part of Zimbabwe’s pathway to clearing arrears with international creditors.
