The County just doesn’t get it. Homelessness won’t be solved with temporary parking lots. It won’t be solved by throwing people into hotels. The real solution is tackling the root causes: drug and alcohol addiction and untreated mental illness. Until we address those, nothing will change.

Encampments on fire again in Ballard. Followed up today with cold water — same people, still trapped in untreated mental illness and severe drug addiction. It’s clear this is a chosen lifestyle for many. They’ve had housing but won’t stay in it. We need camping bans + a real three-strikes plan: jail or mandated treatment. Enough is enough. Alan Milburn’s revealed over the weekend that we currently spend £25 keeping young people on benefits for every £1 helping them get into work. We clearly need to shift the dial to prioritise helping the nearly 1m NEETs into work. This is a point I made last week in the in the House of Lords. It is a pity that the King’s Speech didn’t include legislation to address this – the crisis won’t be solved through tweaks alone.
