“Could’ve been disastrous.” An air traffic controller was stunned after realizing two American Airlines aircraft on the same frequency were using the exact same call sign: American 2482. One was on the arrival while the other was departing, creating the risk that a crew could respond to an instruction intended for the other aircraft. Daniels also told Tony Dokoupil that “it is not uncommon to routinely combine…positions,” as there is currently a controller shortage in the U.S.
