String Theory Lecture 1 A String Does Not Move Like a Point A point particle traces a line through spacetime. A string traces a surface. This is the first geometric shift in String Theory. Particle mechanics asks where one object is at time t, so its history is a curve. String Theory asks where every point of an extended object is at worldsheet time τ, so we need another coordinate telling us where we are along the string. For a point particle x(t) So, for one input of time we get a position in Spacetime. For a string Xᵘ(τ,σ) Here τ plays the role of time on the worldsheet, while σ labels position along the string. Freeze τ and vary σ, and you see the string at one instant. Let τ move, and that curve sweeps out a two-dimensional surface... the worldsheet. The same comparison appears in the action. For a relativistic point particle, the geometric action measures worldline length S = −m ∫ ds If we parameterize the path by t, the action has one integral, one parameter, and one tangent vector dxᵘ/dt For a string, the same idea grows by one dimension. The action measures area, not length. In Nambu-Goto form, S = −T ∫ dτ dσ √[−det hₐᵦ] Here T is the string tension. It plays a role similar to mass, but for an extended object. It weights the area of a surface rather than the length of a line. The particle action has ∫ dt because the history is one-dimensional. The string action has ∫ dτ dσ because the history is two-dimensional. We are no longer summing along a path, we are summing over a surface. The geometry changes for the same reason. For the particle, one derivative is enough dxᵘ/dt For the string, the geometry is built from two derivatives: ∂τXᵘ and ∂σXᵘ The first tells you how the string changes as worldsheet time flows. The second tells you how the embedding changes as you move along the string. The point particle extremizes length and the string extremizes area. After choosing conformal gauge, varying with respect to Xᵘ gives (∂²/∂τ² − ∂²/∂σ²) Xᵘ = 0 This is the first real dynamical payoff... a two-dimensional wave equation on the worldsheet. For a point particle, the equation of motion tells you how one position evolves along one path. For a string, it tells you how an entire curve evolves, with waves traveling along it. The term ∂²Xᵘ/∂τ² measures acceleration in worldsheet time, while ∂²Xᵘ/∂σ² measures curvature along the string. The time evolution is balanced by how the string bends along its own length. This is why strings have oscillation modes. A point particle has one trajectory. A string has many possible vibration patterns, each one a normal mode of the worldsheet wave equation. For a closed string, σ wraps around the loop Xᵘ(τ, σ + 2π) = Xᵘ(τ, σ) For an open string, one standard free-end condition is ∂σXᵘ = 0 at the endpoints. Solving the wave equation gives waves moving in opposite directions along the string Xᵘ(τ,σ) = Fᵘ(τ + σ) + Gᵘ(τ − σ) A function of τ + σ moves one way. A function of τ − σ moves the other. Therefore, a particle has a worldline, its action measures length, and its geometry uses one tangent. Two people who were early in Bitcoin and early in Ethereum just went on record about $TAO. One of them wrote a book about Bitcoin in 2013. The other invested in the Ethereum ICO in 2015. Both of them started a fund with Jason Calacanis with a single thesis. Bittensor is the third great open-source substrate after Bitcoin and Ethereum. Here is the exact framing they used. In the early 90s Microsoft, AOL, and CompuServe were the well-capitalised incumbents. Everyone thought they would monopolise and run away with the internet. Then TCP/IP, Linux, and the World Wide Web came along and everything converged on an open-source substrate. Bittensor is that open-source substrate for the AI story playing out right now. OpenAI. Anthropic. Google DeepMind. XAI. Different cast of characters. Same pattern. And this time you can actually own a piece of the open-source substrate. Now read the valuation mismatch that should stop you cold. The four main AI labs combined are worth approximately $1.5 trillion. Bittensor is worth $1.7 billion. Ridges subnet competes directly with Claude and Cursor and has beaten them on benchmarks. Ridges market cap is $30 million. Cursor is worth $30 billion. That is not a small dislocation. That is a comical one. The highest valued subnet in the entire ecosystem is around $80 million. There has never been a billion dollar subnet yet. On Ethereum during the ICO mania projects with nowhere near this quality of output were raising hundreds of millions within minutes. Now think about how many orders of magnitude more capital is chasing AI opportunities today compared to 2017. Layer 2s on Bitcoin open up opportunities for innovation, allowing developers to build dApps and smart contracts on top of Bitcoin, expanding its utility and use cases. By submitting transactions for final settlement on the Bitcoin network, Bitcoin Layer 2 networks claim to achieve the same (or close to) level of security and decentralization as the Bitcoin blockchain. Building a separate execution layer allows them the freedom to employ several technologies (such as rollups). Layer 2 can significantly improve Bitcoin's scalability by processing transactions off-chain, reducing congestion on the main blockchain. Overall, Layer 2s on Bitcoin have the potential to address some of Bitcoin's key limitations, making it more efficient, accessible, and versatile in the long run. 2: What does the ETF approval mean for Layer 2 on Bitcoin? The approval of ETF could potentially have several implications for Layer 2 on Bitcoin: Innovation and Development: With a growing interest in Bitcoin spurred by ETF approval, there could be a surge in research and development efforts focused on enhancing Layer 2. Developers and projects may be incentivized to create new and improved Layer 2 protocols to meet the evolving needs of the expanding Bitcoin ecosystem. An ETF approval could boost mainstream Bitcoin adoption and liquidity. This influx of users may also drive interest in Layer 2 on Bitcoin as a means to enhance the scalability and functionality of Bitcoin. 3: What are the primary challenges facing L2s on Bitcoin? The interoperability of different Layer 2s and their compatibility with Bitcoin's main blockchain can be a challenge.
