The Blackburn Perth was Britain's largest biplane flying boat to serve with the RAF in the 1930s. Built as an upgraded Blackburn Iris, this massive three-engine beast (Rolls-Royce Buzzard engines, each pumping out over 800 hp) had a 97-foot wingspan, could haul 2,000 lb of bombs or depth charges, and flew with a crew of five or six. Its standout feature was the bow-mounted Coventry Ordnance Works (C.O.W.) 37mm automatic cannon — a rapid-firing anti-shipping weapon that fired up to 100 rounds per minute with a one-mile range, meant to target enemy vessels from the air. K3580 seen here was lost in heavy seas off Stornoway in 1935 when a wing float tore away during takeoff, sealing the type's short RAF career with No. 209 Squadron before monoplane flying boats took over.

The Tri-Engined jet with four engines. The HS Trident was, obviously, a tri-jet, using three Rolls-Royce Spey engines. However, the final version of it, the 1969 Trident 3 - seen here in this video - was stretched for extra seating and range. And so what did HS do? They installed a fourth engine, a "booster" in the tail, a RR RB.162 originally intended as a lift engine for VTOL applications (the ill-fated Mirage IV was one of the few jets that used such an engine) With three or four engines, for various reasons - including the ever-present political mongerings in UK aviation, only axed with Airbus - the Trident was not a success, and only 117 were built. (Also, wouldn´t it be simple to change to different, more powerful engines? Unfortunately, it wasn´t possible on the Trident... so no wonder other customers opted for the more flexible 727 and DC-9)
