The only solution besides credibility is for each person to deploy their own AI agent to do the spam filtering at scale locally on all their applications. This will likely be a highly desirable use case for agents near term. A global AI slop fencing protocol for each end user.

Mo's profile picture
Mo7 months ago

spam filtering is basically impossible now

Spencer Cooley's profile picture
Spencer Cooley7 months ago

Yes but as the deployment of spam becomes more complex and larger in volume my hope is the effectiveness of AI spam filtering exceeds it. We’re certainly not there but I’d like to be optimistic

One funny thing: On @CyberpunkGame lore, the old internet died because of rogue AIs so humans needed to stay away from it. Even after decades they were still trying to recover old information lost after the "Big Crash" It's nice how much they kinda nailed the lore on this game

Actually that’s a great point. In the real world word of mouth is a very powerful means of connecting & doing business. High % get their jobs because of a friend that knew someone. We can continue to network and share value and close off from the rest. Invite only human2human networks.

My elderly parents already have a hard time detecting a spam call even when the person on the other end has a strong accent. Imagine if they speak perfect English and can pass a turning test. They will have no chance.

In a way it's return to old Internet. You went to specific sites/people who you trusted. Giving it all up to be guided like sheep by algoritms always was a terrible choice, so it's not surprising it eventually blew up in everybody's faces

The age verification bill is FANG trying to save it's tax free 'growth model' from this. Don't play along and give away your karma away to them.

The solution is Bitcoin. It was partially based upon a spam solution for email. You make it cost money to post/reply (instead of a subscription). Only an insignificant amount. This destroys spam businesses with fees while only costing real people the price of a coffee weekly.

Oh there is a solution, and is online ID. It can also be anonymous, like a staking system: look at twitter blue check, you spend money for it. Same thing could be done at the internet level, but companies have to agree to use the same ID system. I think maybe crypto could help

Retweed, then undid the retweet because of the doomer messaging. Yes, it's a shit situation. No I don't agree that there's nothing we can do about it. There's always something you can do, even if I don't know what it is. Someone will figure it out.

Mo's profile picture
Mo7 months ago

i don’t think it’s doomer tbh. seems like a pro-human conclusion.

Christopher's profile picture
Christopher7 months ago

Maybe it's my read then. Idk. I do not want participation online to inadvertently go down the faceID/verification route to get around sophisticated bots. Not saying this is your position, but there are definitely forces pushing that idea (reddit latest example)

Spam requires: identity + outbound access + volume. Remove outbound access. Spam: impossible. Not mitigated. Not filtered. Not monitored. Impossible.

All the slop is making the case for axing anonymity on the web more credible. There's both good and bad to that. Not sure where I sit with it. Need to think about it for longer.
