In 1991-92, Israr Khan was transferred from Srinagar to Anantnag and posted as Deputy SP. On one occasion, when militants killed some civilian, SSP deputed DSP Israr Khan to Kulgam. All bridges on Veshav and other streams had been burned down by the militants to block security forces' movement from Anantnag to their "liberated zone" of Kulgam. DSP Khan crossed the rivulet by boat after paying fare to the boatman. As he reached the militant-infested village of Khudwani, he was kidnapped and produced before a Punjabi speaking Pakistani commander who was not ruthless, though, after sensing his linguistic affinity with Khan. DSP Khan was told that the militants had already seized the SHO and other cops with their vehicle and held them in custody. After some questioning, Israr Khan was let off but while leaving the area, he was detained by security forces. He was told that he was in company of the militants at Khudwani. Again, the BSF officer was a Punjabi speaking--Sikh. He too became jovial with Khan and helped him to return to Anantnag.
