We need to fund public schools in this country, especially in working-class neighborhoods. You can’t call yourself the party of the working class and then take away funding from schools that serve working-class kids. You can’t call yourself the party of the working class and then say a working-class kid who wants to go to college shouldn’t be able to get loans or scholarships to do that.

Republicans want three things: to balance the budget, to cut taxes for everyone including the rich, and to be the party of the working class. They have to pick two of the three—and it's obvious which to pick. Being a working class party isn't a slogan—it's gotta be policy.

Immigration used to be a working-class issue. Workers saw it as competition for jobs, housing, hospital beds, and every other government benefit. Milton Friedman said it plainly: you cannot have open immigration and a welfare state. The welfare state turns into a magnet, pulling more people into a government system where the pie is fixed. Every new claimant takes from someone who was already there. Either benefits get cut, or taxes go up, and the working class always pays. That’s why the political class now scapegoats the rich. They need the working man angry at billionaires so he doesn’t notice his slice of the welfare pie shrinking or quietly accept higher taxes to fund it all. Keep the resentment pointed upward, and maybe he won’t turn on the politicians actually responsible.

What makes Kshama Sawant different is she understands that in order to win victories for working people you have to confront capital: “Under capitalism we didn’t make it a class struggle, it is a class struggle because the capitalist class and their politicians fight to the bitter end for their interests. We have to do the same for the interests of the working class.” She is running as an independent socialist for Congress to take on the capitalist duopoly, end the wars, stop the genocide, and nationalize health care. Ossoff: And let me just say this about JD Vance, because he was supposed to be this avatar of a new GOP that was for working class people. His legacy forever now is casting the decisive vote to throw millions of Americans off health care, throw seniors out of their nursing home beds, all to serve the wealthiest and most powerful people in the country. He has zero credibility as a champion for America's working class, and the damage control he's trying to do in Georgia this week is going to fall flat. And Georgians have already rejected this policy.

Speaking to the BBC, Ash Sarkar says Labour was wrong to pander to the right, rather than addressing issues that unite people across the political spectrum. “The most important issue across all the different parts of the electorate is the cost of living,” says Sarkar, adding that tackling it could bring together “a working class Muslim voter in east London” and “a white working class voter in the northeast”.
