I haven't watched the movie but from what I read... Odysseus's crew mainly just suffers the consequences of whatever stupid, prideful, or vain thing he feels like doing

Iirc, in the book, some other God, told Odysseus to not tell his crew about any of the deadly dangers that their route had waiting for them. Like that snake that ate 3 or 4 guys or that geyser that blew apart part of the ship.
