The number of RTS games published in the 90s is massive. Obviously, not all were top-notch, but KKnD (Krush, Kill 'n' Destroy) was a real badass. Developed by Beam Software, an Australian team, it had that Mad Max vibe with its dystopian, nuclear-devastated world. It lacked the brand power of the Command & Conquer series but was excellent nonetheless, especially given the smaller team and budget. A sequel came out in 1998, but I always felt fonder of the original KKnD. Maybe the RTS genre just became oversaturated at some point...

The intros of some 90s games with their epic monologues and bombastic music still gets me to this day! I feel that among the legends like Dune 2, Age of Empires and Command & Conquer, some games have gotten lost in the shuffle a bit - at least to a degree. One of those is Total Annihilation (1997), a groundbreaking real-time strategy game by Cavedog Entertainment, led by Chris Taylor. Interesting note: The producer of the game was none other than Ron Gilbert (the genius behind Maniac Mansion and Monkey Island). Players build massive armies, managing streaming metal and energy resources, limitless, gathered via extractors, for factories churning out tanks, aircraft, and nukes. Epic battles feature thousands of units, realistic physics, radar jamming, and Jeremy Soule's orchestral score. It has a 96% approval rating on Steam, so it shows that even today - almost 30 years later - TA still has a strong following and active mod community. It also shows that a selected group of those 90s games found the perfect balance between cocept, gameplay, difficulty and replayability, a true testament to greatness

One of the best turn-based strategy games of the 90s was Heroes of Might and Magic III, which turns 25 this year. While RTS games took a much bigger market share (think StarCraft, Age of Empires, Command & Conquer...), I always had a soft spot for the "less hectic" and almost soothing type of turn-based games. Among the greats from the 90s era, I think the Heroes of Might and Magic series is among the very top. The incredibly beautiful, detailed, and vibrant design, the iconic soundtrack, the classic gameplay - all that made for perfect late night sessions that usually went on for way too long because "just one more turn... ok, maybe one more... oh dang, it's 3 in the morning". If you've been there, you know. Heroes of Might and Magic is one of the longest living series in gaming history, now entering its 31st year, with the first release in 1995 and latest release in 2025 (Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era). If you were/are a turn-based strategy fan, I bet you played this classic gem of a game.

2003 was my second year at university. It wasn't my best. Why, you ask? Well... Command & Conquer: Generals was released. Whether or not it's nostalgia, Generals still ranks among the best RTS games ever made. For a 2003 game, the graphics were great, the sound effects were excellent and the music was in a league of its own. The cutscenes in between, the different powers you could play, the modification options for some vehicles - so many aspects of C&C were defining what RTS meant back then, a benchmark setting masterpiece.
