When I heard Daytona USA was coming to the Sega Saturn, I sold all my other consoles and saved up for it. Finally got the Saturn and Daytona running at home—total mind-blow 🤯. Sure, it wasn’t quite arcade-perfect, but just being able to play it at home was enough. By the time Dreamcast came around, the port was almost flawless. Fun fact: Saturn was almost done as a 2D machine, but after seeing PlayStation’s 3D power, Sega tweaked it late—3D performance ended up a bit lacking. Irony is, the same Sega that pioneered 3D with Virtua Racing and Virtua Fighter thought consoles weren’t ready yet.

Because of that, it wasn’t the massive leap that Model 3 had been, but it still ended up getting a huge variety of games from not only Sega, but many other companies as well. Asterix for the Sega Master System is a high-quality 8-bit platformer released in 1991 by Sega. With good graphics, responsive controls and distinct character mechanics (you start with Asterix then change to Obelix later, etc.), it's another late gem for the system that was positively received. Released in Japan, Europe and Brazil, it was unsurprisingly omitted from the North American market (probably because the comic book isn't popular there).

One of Sega’s greatest strengths in the 1990s was its ability to create arcade games using 3D hardware that completely outclassed the competition. Virtua Racing and Virtua Fighter were developed on the Model 1 arcade system, which was based on advanced 3D technology originally developed for military applications. At the time, their performance was so impressive that other 3D games simply couldn’t compare. Because of that, it was extremely difficult to accurately reproduce these games on home consoles. In the early 1990s, the Model 1 arcade hardware cost close to $7,000, and even Sega’s own systems—the Mega Drive, 32X, and later the Sega Saturn—struggled to deliver arcade-perfect versions. Back then, I was disappointed by the gap in quality between the arcade and home versions. Looking back now, though, it’s amazing that Sega managed to port them as well as they did. It almost feels like a miracle. After eventually buying an arcade cabinet and a Model 1 board, I learned something I hadn’t realized before: Model 1 supported high-resolution monitors, unlike the standard displays used by most home systems. In those days, the average gamer didn’t even think about screen resolution, so seeing Virtua Fighter on a high-resolution arcade monitor created a fundamentally different experience from the home versions. When I first played Virtua Fighter on the Sega Saturn, I remember feeling that something was missing. The Train Level in Uncharted 2 is one of my favorite moments in any videogame, ever. It's still crazy to me that the locomotive is actually moving through a hand-crafted level. You and enemies react to swerving on the tracks and it makes combat super dynamic. It's nothing short of a technical achievement. For its time it was mind-blowing, and in many ways today it still is! 🚆

One of the reasons the Sega Saturn versions of Virtua Fighter 2 and Daytona USA looked so different from the arcade versions was because of this resolution gap. Virtua Racing: FlatOut looks very nice on PS2, but it lacks a bit of pop. I've fixed it for myself in PCSX2. It's not a perfect analogue for the arcade version, much like the game itself, but I'm getting it closer to the OG colours and vibes for my tastes. Great game, btw ❤️
