When I heard Daytona USA was coming to the Sega Saturn, I sold all my other consoles and saved up for it. Finally got the Saturn and Daytona running at home—total mind-blow 🤯. Sure, it wasn’t quite arcade-perfect, but just being able to play it at home was enough. By the time Dreamcast came around, the port was almost flawless. Fun fact: Saturn was almost done as a 2D machine, but after seeing PlayStation’s 3D power, Sega tweaked it late—3D performance ended up a bit lacking. Irony is, the same Sega that pioneered 3D with Virtua Racing and Virtua Fighter thought consoles weren’t ready yet.

In arcades, they were producing 3D games on a completely different level from their competitors, and they were constantly experimenting with new ideas on the home console side as well. If you look at the Mega Drive version of Virtua Racing, SEGA managed to bring over an arcade-quality experience by adding a special processor directly into the cartridge. Seeing that success, they likely realized that a dock-on device with its own dedicated hardware could allow the Mega Drive to handle 3D games—especially SEGA’s arcade-style 3D titles. That idea eventually became the 32X. At the time, the Mega Drive (Genesis) was incredibly popular in North America, so the concept definitely had potential. The problem was its timing. The 32X launched around the same period as SEGA’s next-generation console, the Sega Saturn, which created confusion in the market. If it had been released even a year earlier, giving players earlier access to games like Virtua Fighter and Virtua Racing, it might have achieved much stronger sales. And by the way, the Mega Drive shown in the video is a custom modification that combines the console and the 32X into a single integrated unit. 😆

The Train Level in Uncharted 2 is one of my favorite moments in any videogame, ever. It's still crazy to me that the locomotive is actually moving through a hand-crafted level. You and enemies react to swerving on the tracks and it makes combat super dynamic. It's nothing short of a technical achievement. For its time it was mind-blowing, and in many ways today it still is! 🚆

This was the same resolution commonly used by CRT TVs and many 8-bit, 16-bit, and 32-bit home consoles. Then Sega introduced higher-resolution arcade games with Virtua Fighter and Virtua Racing, which used 24kHz (496×384). Sega Model 1, 2, and 3 arcade boards are famous for using this resolution. One of the reasons the Sega Saturn versions of Virtua Fighter 2 and Daytona USA looked so different from the arcade versions was because of this resolution gap. Later 3D arcade games moved to 31kHz (640×480) resolution. Sega NAOMI games are one of the best-known examples. That’s why you need to be careful when buying an arcade cabinet. Early cabinets only supported 15kHz, while the commonly seen Astro City supported both 15kHz and 24kHz. Virtua Racing: FlatOut looks very nice on PS2, but it lacks a bit of pop. I've fixed it for myself in PCSX2. It's not a perfect analogue for the arcade version, much like the game itself, but I'm getting it closer to the OG colours and vibes for my tastes. Great game, btw ❤️

Namco’s Ridge Racer was the first arcade game to run at a silky smooth 60 frames per second in full 3D🏎️💨 It was so hardware-heavy that the arcade board cost more than a literal car. It set the standard for drifting mechanics that every racing game has benefited from since.
