When I heard Daytona USA was coming to the Sega Saturn, I sold all my other consoles and saved up for it. Finally got the Saturn and Daytona running at home—total mind-blow 🤯. Sure, it wasn’t quite arcade-perfect, but just being able to play it at home was enough. By the time Dreamcast came around, the port was almost flawless. Fun fact: Saturn was almost done as a 2D machine, but after seeing PlayStation’s 3D power, Sega tweaked it late—3D performance ended up a bit lacking. Irony is, the same Sega that pioneered 3D with Virtua Racing and Virtua Fighter thought consoles weren’t ready yet.

Because of that, it wasn’t the massive leap that Model 3 had been, but it still ended up getting a huge variety of games from not only Sega, but many other companies as well. Popular titles like Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and Capcom vs. SNK 2 were also NAOMI-based games. What was disappointing, though, was the irony that Virtua Fighter 4 never came to the Dreamcast and was instead released on the PlayStation 2.

Asterix for the Sega Master System is a high-quality 8-bit platformer released in 1991 by Sega. With good graphics, responsive controls and distinct character mechanics (you start with Asterix then change to Obelix later, etc.), it's another late gem for the system that was positively received. Released in Japan, Europe and Brazil, it was unsurprisingly omitted from the North American market (probably because the comic book isn't popular there).

One of Sega’s greatest strengths in the 1990s was its ability to create arcade games using 3D hardware that completely outclassed the competition. Virtua Racing and Virtua Fighter were developed on the Model 1 arcade system, which was based on advanced 3D technology originally developed for military applications. At the time, their performance was so impressive that other 3D games simply couldn’t compare. Because of that, it was extremely difficult to accurately reproduce these games on home consoles. In the early 1990s, the Model 1 arcade hardware cost close to $7,000, and even Sega’s own systems—the Mega Drive, 32X, and later the Sega Saturn—struggled to deliver arcade-perfect versions. Back then, I was disappointed by the gap in quality between the arcade and home versions. Looking back now, though, it’s amazing that Sega managed to port them as well as they did. It almost feels like a miracle. After eventually buying an arcade cabinet and a Model 1 board, I learned something I hadn’t realized before: Model 1 supported high-resolution monitors, unlike the standard displays used by most home systems. In those days, the average gamer didn’t even think about screen resolution, so seeing Virtua Fighter on a high-resolution arcade monitor created a fundamentally different experience from the home versions. When I first played Virtua Fighter on the Sega Saturn, I remember feeling that something was missing. At the time, I assumed it was simply the lower polygon count, but after seeing the original hardware in action, I realized that the difference in resolution also played a huge role. Sega’s arcade games—especially those built on the Model 1, Model 2, and Model 3 platforms—represent the peak of the company’s technological achievements. The Train Level in Uncharted 2 is one of my favorite moments in any videogame, ever. It's still crazy to me that the locomotive is actually moving through a hand-crafted level. You and enemies react to swerving on the tracks and it makes combat super dynamic. It's nothing short of a technical achievement. For its time it was mind-blowing, and in many ways today it still is! 🚆

Then Sega introduced higher-resolution arcade games with Virtua Fighter and Virtua Racing, which used 24kHz (496×384). Sega Model 1, 2, and 3 arcade boards are famous for using this resolution. One of the reasons the Sega Saturn versions of Virtua Fighter 2 and Daytona USA looked so different from the arcade versions was because of this resolution gap. Later 3D arcade games moved to 31kHz (640×480) resolution. Sega NAOMI games are one of the best-known examples. That’s why you need to be careful when buying an arcade cabinet. Early cabinets only supported 15kHz, while the commonly seen Astro City supported both 15kHz and 24kHz. Later cabinets like Blast City, Net City, and New Net City were known as “3-mode” cabinets because they supported all three resolutions. Virtua Racing: FlatOut looks very nice on PS2, but it lacks a bit of pop. I've fixed it for myself in PCSX2. It's not a perfect analogue for the arcade version, much like the game itself, but I'm getting it closer to the OG colours and vibes for my tastes. Great game, btw ❤️

The Nintendo 64 was truly revolutionary because it established many of the fundamentals of 3D game design that are still used today. Wave Race 64 is a jet ski racing game, and its wave simulation was absolutely incredible for its time. The way the jet ski reacts to the constantly changing waves is so realistic that it’s still impressive even by today’s standards.
