The problem isn’t that we don’t know what works. It’s that too many programs still avoid it… This is Ajax training in the 90s. Drills into sprints. Bounding. Resisted runs. Stair jumps. Strength work. Agility. No gimmicks, they were training off principles that still hold

true today. There aren’t separate laws for soccer players. Speed, force output, and tendon stiffness all follow the same biomechanical and physiological truths. Regardless of your sport, The body adapts to load, intensity, and progression. If you want to move faster, you need

force. You need coordination. You need tendons that can tolerate, store, and reapply high forces efficiently. That doesn’t come from gimmicks or endless small sided games. Too much modern soccer preparation confuses specificity with effectiveness. Meanwhile, the core physical

Heavy squats with good range of motion have always protected from injuries and increased athlete potential. But it is too cheap, too hard and does not sell anything nor shows you have discovered the wheel again.People like to be fooled and nowadays nobody studies history of sports

It’s not an either/or. Full ROM during GPP, move towards partial in SPP. Basic stuff. Captions provide context. Read before pretending you know.

I know you are the expert. You forget that while you are showing videos, some people was there training soccer players in the 80s, 90s in Portugal. A couple of things worked and others did not. And don't forget to tell people about motor learning and genetics too. Be nice.

Each post can’t cover every topic on earth. I’ve discussed motor learning, genetics, fiber types, etc.

Haven’t seen any soccer team in Europe do resisted sprinting apart from this clip, which amazes me. Soccer coaches have become obsessed with the idea that everything has to be ”sport specific”.

Depending on the population - the problem is that everything works and programs often have success in spite of programming.

Agility is the first skill you need in football, that all round robustness and it comes from frequent training and playing not al these data analysis things they incorporate into football . High football understanding of Biomechanics and well conditioned physical support systems

This is incredibly outdated. 25yrs ago, people abandoned this methodology and integrated physical work with the technical and tactical work, on the field, complemented with the gym. It's called tactical periodization. "A pianist doesn't improve by running around the piano."

Watching the average top tier team warm up before a match hurts my head and my heart. There is no wonder the players suffer so many hamstring and adductor issues when the quality of training is so poor.

Fred is actually pointing to an important issue, but there are a few points I would like to add from my own perspective. While his argument contains some valid truths, it oversimplifies the matter. Football performance is not solely about strength, speed, and tendon qualities; perception, decision-making, and game-specific coordination are just as important. Small-sided games are not used only for conditioning, but to develop a player’s ability to act and respond at the right moment within the game. Physical qualities developed without context do not always transfer to match performance. The real problem is not specificity itself, but the poor balance between physical training and game-specific work. In football, the true need is not simply to be faster, but to be fast at the right moment. Moreover, unless human anatomy undergoes a fundamental evolutionary change, these physical demands cannot keep increasing indefinitely; the body has biological limits, and those limits will inevitably show themselves over time.
