Just got back from Syria. Visited Damascus, Homs, Hama, Idlib, Aleppo + some towns in Aleppo, Idlib, Tartous, and Hama provinces. The mood in the cities is generally joyful/relief and some worry. They want power, water, security, and a functioning economy. In most towns, didn't see much life. Millions of people will return to homes that weren't destroyed by bombs — they were gutted by thieves dispatched by the regime. Windows, doors, pipes, wires, fittings, everything stripped. Appliances, clothes, items with negligible value, taken, leaving concrete shells behind. The roads to these ghost towns are so bad that some have disappeared completely. Immense challenges ahead. There's a widespread sense of rebirth among Syrians. Once the euphoria passes, it will be time to rebuild and establish a government that serves the people and not itself.

An overlooked dimension in Syria’s analysis is personal and emotional for the rebels: the longing for home and family reunification. In this multilayered event, the uprising of the displaced is clear. Since the offensive began, Syrian timelines are filled with videos of families reuniting, tears, collapses, and overwhelming emotions. Many of the fighters I have seen in videos are from displaced communities, separated from their homes and families for over a decade and fighting to go back to their towns. “Psychological incentives and material temptations such as money or new clothes” learn the truth about how #SDF forces recruit #children after abducting them from their families. Girls and boys, some no older than twelve, left their schools and homes and then vanished from their world cut off from their former lives and from their families’ sight. Weeks or even months later, they suddenly reappeared in photographs wearing military uniforms and carrying weapons among the ranks of the #Syrian Democratic Forces (#SDF). In other cases, families received devastating news that their children had been killed on battlefields they did not choose, but were forced into. This raises a critical question: what is the truth behind the #SDF’s recruitment of #children? A dark reality has been documented by local and international human rights organizations, pointing to the forced recruitment of #boys and #girls in areas under #SDF control, often without the knowledge or consent of their #families. According to reports, the methods used to recruit minors vary. Sometimes, as documented by the Syria Justice and Accountability Center, children are invited to attend media or photography courses affiliated with #SDF units, only to never return home. In other cases, reported by the #Syrian Network for #HumanRights, material and moral incentives such as money or new clothes are used to deceive children. There is also a more brutal method: direct kidnapping, carried out by trained and specialized units that seize children from streets or neighborhoods during times when parental supervision is absent. The vulnerability of these children plays a major role in making them easy targets. Poverty, lack of education, and harsh living conditions particularly in displacement camps leave children exposed to organized recruitment efforts. It was found that individuals affiliated with the #SDF, operating under the name of the Revolutionary Youth Movement, encouraged boys and girls in camps to join military training without their parents’ knowledge. In some cases, the only evidence parents had of their children’s fate were photographs showing them in military uniforms months after their disappearance. Notably, these recruitment campaigns do not distinguish between boys and girls. #Girls are recruited at similar rates, a practice partly attributed to the #SDF’s ideology, which promotes women’s participation in combat as part of its organizational identity, particularly through female units such as the #YPJ. From a legal perspective, the recruitment and use of children in armed conflict constitutes a grave violation of international humanitarian law and human rights. The occupation is weaponizing starvation. Israel has not let any aid into Gaza, and they control each border crossing. Thousands of trucks are waiting to enter, to provide food, medication, necessities, to men, women, children, the sick, and the elderly. The ONLY entity stopping this life saving aid coming in is the apartheid, illegitimate state, of Israel. Families plea for anything at all to help them survive. Since the ending of the ceasefire, 100,000 people have been forcefully displaced from Rafah with only the clothes on their backs, or not even that as the last man explains. To Jamaica with Love from T&T Today, I visited the Plipdeco warehouse in Point Lisas to view the critical relief supplies collected from national stakeholders -including the Trinidad and Tobago Manufacturers’ Association, the Trinidad and Tobago Supermarkets Association, and other valued private sector partners. Tonight, eight containers filled with essential supplies will depart Trinidad for Jamaica. In addition, a team of Defence Force officers will be deployed to provide on-the-ground support and assistance. I extend my deepest condolences to the families who have lost loved ones . Jamaica has always been a second home to me, as I spent 14 years of my life there as both a university student and lecturer. The Inter-Ministerial Committee will continue discussions on the mobilisation of aid for other countries in the region that have also been affected.

Along the coast of Tamil Nadu, in the waters of Ramanathapuram, particularly around Pamban, Keelakarai and Ervadi over 300 traditionally skilled fisherwomen dive into the sea everyday to earn for their families. Setting out in groups of eight to ten by boat before sunrise, they skin-dive up to depths of 4–5 metres, hand-picking seaweed from the seabed and gathering it in mesh bags known locally as kacha. By the time they return to shore around 1 p.m., each woman brings back 10–12 bags of seaweed, with each bag weighing 20–25 kilograms. Their labour sustains their families supporting children’s education, and household needs. While walking through one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, Damascus, you will stumble upon many Christian traditions. One of them is this bakery, which has been serving the Church for over 100 years. For more than a century, St. Hanania Bakery, also known as Abu Suleiman Bakery, has carried on a unique mission. Founded around 1910 by Elias Salmoon, the tradition continues today through the families of the late Gries and Mousa Salmoon, preserving the sacred craft of baking bread for Holy Communion and passing this blessed heritage from one generation to the next. The bakery is also home to one of the first dough-kneading machines introduced in Syria. In the past, families from across Damascus would gather here before Christmas and Easter to prepare their festive breads and cakes.
