This is a very disturbing extract of an interview with Naledi Pandor. In essence, the existence of an independent Afrikaans institution she finds incompatible with any notion of a society. Traces of this should rather be expunged as she phrased as “we are too complacent with our freedom”. What she is advocating for is wide-spread public condemnation of anything that resembles the cultural expression of Afrikaans as language or Afrikaners as a people. Not only that - the “we” she refers to is stated in a totalitarian sense. Not an individual expressing an opinion, but the body of the state that should disallow by force or legislative means, anything that does not conform to their thwarted societal view. This passage of Nineteen Eight-Four comes to mind: “Obedience is not enough. Unless he is suffering, how can you be sure that he is obeying your will and not his own? Power is in inflicting pain and humiliation. Power is in tearing human minds to pieces and putting them together again in new shapes of your choosing…there will be no love, except the love of Big Brother.” As for AfriForum and other institutions of the Solidarity Movement, we see this. We will not succumb to naivety of the intentions that the political order that Pandor aspires to. On the basis of mutual recognition and respect, we shall build a future. Our notion of freedom does not derive from a state that determines how we should think and act, but rather the freedom of individuals and communities giving expression to their talents and capabilities.

People are forgetting the basics of crypto. We're in an institutionally led market now, and crypto is still perceived as the risk-on bet. But the problem is now that there are assets that are riskier but carry higher perceived upside. That makes BTC, ETH, and SOL far less attractive on a relative basis. Crypto is stuck in the middle. Not as stable as gold or growth equities, not as exciting as the IPO craze we're about to witness or the DRAM fund. What you're seeing is a massive rotation of capital. "[Putin] is not interested in an independent Ukraine, he needs Ukraine as a part, an enclave of russia, as he did with Belarus, as he did with Moldova, Georgia. Everywhere, as in our case, a part of an integral territory is seized, so that there is no stability and in time he can come and seize the whole thing." What's the solution if Putin's goal is to gradually try and take much of Eastern Europe?

I can’t say exactly how effective Bitcoin is as a money, but it’s being perceived by many as an alternative money and so is worth paying attention to. Money needs to be both a medium of exchange and a storehold of wealth — and the latter is more important. I doubt that any central bank will take it on as a reserve currency. That’s because all of the transactions are public, so there’s no privacy to it, and there’s a risk that in the future the code could be broken to make it less effective through government controls. My personal approach is that I do have some Bitcoin in my portfolio, but not much.

Secure attachment during infancy lays the foundation for our lifelong mental and physical health. As I wind down this week’s series on infant/toddler attachment, I wanted to conclude with a few final words about why it matters so much. Obviously, strong relational connections between parents and children are beneficial in and of themselves. But there’s more to it than that. Attachment grounds and shapes our long-term mental health as well as our ability to enter into positive relationships with others. You see, children who are securely attached tend to be just that: Secure. This allows them to navigate the world independently, with confidence in themselves and their abilities. It almost seems contradictory that independence would spring from dependence. But it most surely does. The more love and care children receive during their earliest months and years and the more attentively and predictably their needs are met by treasured loved ones, the more they experience the world as safe place. And this is a gift to both the brain and the body. When the human body is not flooded daily with stress hormones and when anxiety occurs - not as a constant state - but more occasionally in response to life’s challenges, not only are we better prepared to deal with it - but our bodies don’t bear the long-term burden of a constant stress response. This is a fascinating area of early development that we are still only beginning to fully understand, but suffice it to say that positive early experiences - both in the home and in conjunction with high quality early education and care programs- are increasingly linked to lifelong health. This brain-body connection has huge implications not only for individual children, but for our public policy. A tweet is hardly the place to unpack this conversation in full, but know that my new book, The Daycare Myth (which can be ordered from the link in my bio) explores in detail the disconnect between what we know about the science of early development and how it is enacted (or, more frequently, not enacted) in our public policy. The costs - both developmentally and economically - are astronomical.
