Our veterans deserve better. When a veteran files a disability claim or seeks mental health care, they shouldn't be delayed by 1980s software. The VA's aging IT systems create months-long backlogs for benefits our veterans earned. As governor, I'll modernize South Carolina's systems with the same urgency. This is just sad. California spends 8 to 10 times more on services for illegal immigrants than it does on veterans services from the General Fund. And now the legislature is trying to mislead the people of California with another Trojan horse ballot title by calling this Measure “Veteran and Affordable Housing Bond.” I voted no today because veterans should be prioritized in our budget. We should not have to pull a bond out during a record revenue year and a record budget. When the state spends over $10 billion on illegal immigrant services, including lawyer fees and medical healthcare, but only about $500 million on our veterans, we have a problem. Is it too hard to ask that we make sure every single veteran is off the street before providing services to individuals from other countries? Is it too much to ask that our veterans who fought for this country are provided more services and resources than individuals from other countries? Never let the state tell you we do not have enough money. What they really mean is that they just do not have enough money for you. Share, repost, vote, and save California.

I first introduced the Ernest Peltz Accrued Veterans Benefits Act two Congresses ago. For years, I’ve worked closely with the Peltz family, veterans service organizations, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to craft legislation to correct a moral wrong. My bill eliminates the burden on a veteran’s surviving family by ensuring that the veteran is entitled to receive their pre-approved pension benefits within the month that death occurs. I represent #NY21—serving the largest number of veterans in any district in NY State. That’s why I’m proud to take action to make sure no family mourning the loss of a beloved veteran has to deal with VA red tape and bureaucratic mistakes. This commonsense bipartisan legislation honors the legacy of World War II veteran Ernest Peltz and takes a critical step toward improving the VA’s effectiveness and accountability. In passing my legislation, Congress will rightfully honor veterans for their service and guarantee their families the dignity and respect they have earned.

Veterans deserve separate legislative attention and special respect. And this must apply not only to veterans themselves, but also to veterans’ families. Unfortunately, this is still not fully reflected in state policy or in communities’ work. But the family of a veteran, the family of our fallen warrior, the family of someone missing in action, the family of a prisoner of war – families must be full-fledged subjects of veterans policy. I ask the Government of Ukraine, together with the Verkhovna Rada and veterans themselves, to prepare the relevant legislative proposals. And perhaps, if there is a need for it – and to ensure that proper respect is reflected in legislation – perhaps we should codify the legislation concerning veterans and adopt a Veterans Code. As a result of my Executive Directive 1, more than 40,000 affordable housing units are in the pipeline and over 6,000 are already under construction. No one who served our country should be living on our streets. Los Angeles has enough housing vouchers to bring every unhoused Veteran into permanent housing. That is why we are partnering with property owners and making building easier, so Veterans can use these vouchers to come inside to safe, stable housing. Nearly 800 Veterans have been housed since we launched our “House our Vets” initiative, and we will keep going until every Veteran has a place to call home.
