The zombie inner core of Typhoon Bavi is undergoing some slight re-intensification. An ice cube’s worth of thunderstorms have regenerated a well-defined eyewall, while a ragged, 958 mbar eye has become present on radar. A direct landfall over Ishigaki, Japan is impending.

🇯🇵 LANDFALL: With sustained winds of 100 mph (160 kph), a central pressure of 951 mbar, and a questionably dilapidated inner core structure, Category 2 Typhoon Bavi appears to have made landfall over Japan’s Tarama Island as one of the largest Typhoons of the 21st Century. To the east of the eye, the island of Miyako-jima is currently enduring the storm’s most intense quadrant of howling winds and rain.

After her first eyewall replacement attempt resulted in a merger that pushed her to a 165 MPH, 913 mbar peak, Super Typhoon Bavi is finally in the throes of a true EWRC. The thick and persistent nature of her inner core is still protecting a stellar Stadium Effect in the eye, but her infrared satellite signature shows a textbook EWRC structure developing, with a pronounced moat thawing out between the colder, dueling eyewalls. Confidence for a direct or near-direct landfall over the tiny island of Rota continues to increase today; however, Guam should keep a very close eye out for any consistent southward jogs in Bavi’s motion. Even a small deviation could expose the 165,000 residents there to high-end Category 4 or 5 winds.

The eye of Fung-wong (UwanPH) is really starting to melt through the icy shell of her CDO now. New, towering thunderstorms are rising up within the inner eyewall as well. On microwave imagery, the Typhoon’s cumbersome core structure is still yet to fully solidify. What we could see in the coming hours, especially after the Pacific sun evanesces below the horizon, is for this new burst of core thunderstorms to freeze the eyewall into a more complete and circular ring around the eye. That would likely jumpstart a true phase of rapid intensification right as Fung-wong enters her final approach to Luzon in the Philippines.

UPDATE: Cyclone Fina has unexpectedly re-intensified to a 120 MPH (195 kph) Category 3 after initially being forecast to only be a Tropical Storm at landfall in the Drysdale River National Park area of Australia. Fina is also trending further south as this ice blender of extremely cold convection swirls around her 958 mbar eye, meaning that landfall could potentially take place closer to the Ord River Nature Reserve.

Typhoon #Bavi is still churning in the Philippine Sea. Though it’s weakening some, it will remain a large and powerful typhoon when it hits the Yaeyama Islands of southern Japan on Friday. The center looks to pass just north of Taiwan before making landfall in China this weekend.

🇨🇳 LANDFALL: A rapidly strengthening Typhoon Noul has made landfall over the ancient, 600 year-old military city of Pinghai, China, with sustained winds of 100 mph (160 kph) and a pressure of <960 mbar. Based on her radar presentation, Noul did not stop organizing and intensifying until her core fully crawled onto land. Drenching rainfall and potentially life-threatening wind conditions are now ongoing NE of the Pearl River Delta.

Tropical Storm Dolphin formed only 17 hours ago and already she is constructing a frantic inner core, with boiling, dry-ice bubbles of convection deep freezing the embryonic eyewall structure hidden beneath the cloud tops. This compact, fast-growing behavior seems to be priming Dolphin for explosively rapid intensification. From the very first advisory, she has been forecast to become a Super Typhoon, and everything we’re seeing right now looks to be snowballing in that direction.

Pacific Hurricane Polo has just been upgraded to CATEGORY 5 intensity after undergoing one of the most extreme rapid intensification phases ever recorded on planet Earth. In just 24 HOURS, his winds have increased by 110 MPH, and his pressure has detonated by 75 MBAR. This essentially matches Hurricane Otis’ unprecedented intensification rate (over almost the exact same waters near Acapulco) back in 2023. As of now, Polo is not forecast to make landfall in Mexico.

BREAKING: Category 5 Hurricane Melissa has achieved a new peak intensity of 180 MPH sustained winds and a core pressure of 896 MBAR. She is officially the 5TH MOST INTENSE Atlantic Hurricane in history and is nearing the maximum theoretical strength a storm can reach in this part of the world. Landfall over Jamaica is just hours away.

Typhoon Dolphin is passing directly over Wenzhou, a city home to nearly 10 MILLION residents, with an extremely heavy rain core and training rainbands on the eastern side of her circulation. While the storm’s winds didn’t really intensity over the East China Sea, her surrounding Central Dense Overcast did, and this last-minute resurgence of tropical convection created a massive wall of heavy rain and storm surge that has slammed hundreds of kilometers of China’s coastline to the north of Dolphin’s ~940 mbar eye. Dangerous freshwater floods and widespread power outages are ongoing.

The previously unnamed Tropical Storm in the shallow Malacca Strait has since been given the name Senyar. The system made landfall over the city of Langsa in Aceh, Indonesia at a 50 mph (80 kph), 996 mbar peak intensity. But Senyar isn’t done. The storm has now RE-EMERGED into the Malacca Strait and is forecast to soon make a second landfall, this one in Malaysia. While Senyar won’t be very strong (potentially only ~40 mph), a Malaysian landfall by a bonafide tropical cyclone is historically rare, as few storms on record have formed this close to the equator (due to the weakness of the Coriolis Effect here).

🌀 Super Typhoon Sinlaku is approaching the Mariana Islands. A powerful Category 5 system with a well-defined eye and winds of around 280 km/h. It has likely peaked but will weaken only gradually. Follow official warnings and instructions from local authorities. ⚠️

NEW! Here's Cat-5 #Hurricane #MELISSA's #Jamaica landfall as captured on Cayman Islands radar. These images did not exist until a few days ago, when b e n 🥀✟ ✟ & team at CINWS processed the data. This is at the very edge of the radar range—the radar site is over 200 mi away—& it's quite attenuated. Even so, this gives us a second complete look at that intense (160-knot) eyewall screaming ashore. The star indicates my location, scraping along the right edge of the eye. An absolutely ferocious storm that remains burned in my mind.

Torrential thunderstorms are on the way that pose a significant threat of flash flooding. The amount of rain will vary from place to place, but some could get 60-90mm, well over a month's worth of rain. Warnings have been already been issued, updates are possible later.

UPDATE: With only a few hours left before landfall in Luzon, colossal Typhoon Fung-wong (UwanPH) has hit a new peak intensity. Her sustained winds are now at 130 MPH (210 kph), and the sea-level pressure in her giant eye has fallen to 943 mbar, making her a CATEGORY 4 storm. This will be the strongest Typhoon to hit the Philippines since Man-yi (Pepito) in November of last year, and is coming just 5 days after Kalmaegi (Tino) ravaged Cebu Island.
