I had a guy walk halfway across the gym and claim he was using the machine I went to before. He was a punk, and he was in the middle of working out somewhere else entirely.

This I disagree. Now the response should be polite, but I consider it rude if someone asked me that. Because their intentions is for you to hurry up or something. There are plenty of people who don't count sets, I'm one of them. I go for failure no matter how long it takes.
