the way this scene is narrated is incredibly genius: the audience can understand what Ilya’s saying, thanks to the subtitles, but Shane can’t. He only feels. And this creates a narrative short circuit where the spectator has a special connection with Ilya, he becomes Ilya, in some way, feeling all his pain, and grief and love. I would say this is one of the most emotionally intense cinematic scenes I’ve experienced on screen. Ever.
