Because of this, consoles like the Hyundai Comboy and Samsung Game Boy series were officially released in Korea, but they were expensive, so they didn’t sell particularly well. Ever since I bought an arcade cabinet, I’ve become really interested in arcade games. Similar to console games, you can buy arcade game PCBs and run them by connecting them directly. Capcom games are a bit unique in that they use a six-button layout, so they require a separate connector, but aside from that, the setup is surprisingly simple. You can also play these games through emulators, but the feeling of enjoying them on real hardware is something else entirely. Super Street Fighter II was the first game for Capcom’s arcade system, CPS2, and compared to CPS1, both the graphics and sound were significantly improved.

Capcom kept upgrading its hardware from CPS1 to CPS3, while SNK stuck with a single platform—the Neo Geo—which was powerful enough to keep receiving new releases from 1990 all the way to 2004. Because of that, many SNK games ported to 8-bit and 16-bit consoles often suffered in quality. However, the PC Engine, despite being an 8-bit system, managed to deliver surprisingly strong ports of SNK games thanks to the power of CD technology. That said, it was incredibly expensive at the time, so I could only admire it at game shops. If I had owned one back then and used it to listen to CDs and play games, it probably would have felt even more impressive than a PlayStation 5 Pro does today.

The reason I got into game collecting was the Neo Geo MVS arcade system. Around 2005, I came across an arcade game community where modders gathered—people who converted arcade games so they could be played at home on consoles. While being active in that community for a long time, I started collecting MVS games one by one. Eventually, that expanded into collecting console systems, PC games, and later even full arcade cabinets. I also began collecting Neo Geo AES from that time. Although I collect many kinds of games, the Neo Geo series is especially meaningful to me.

From 1990 to 2000, he defined the visual identity of Neo Geo — Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting, Samurai Shodown, The King of Fighters, Metal Slug… So many legendary titles brought to life through his art. His illustrations didn’t just promote the games — they gave them soul. Later, he moved to Capcom and continued his legacy, working on GBA Capcom titles, CAPCOM VS SNK 1 & 2, and even contributing artwork to Street Fighter V and VI. A true legend in fighting game history.

If I had to pick Capcom’s greatest 2D beat ’em up, my choices would easily be Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara and Alien vs. Predator. Capcom’s original beat ‘em ups are fantastic, but there’s something even more exciting about seeing the company work with iconic licensed franchises. The idea of humans and Predators joining forces to fight the Aliens is simply too good to fail. Everything about this game is top-notch—the graphics, sound, controls, and even its faithful recreation of the atmosphere from the films. It’s a true masterpiece of the genre. Sadly, because of licensing issues, it was never released on home consoles, making it one of Capcom’s most disappointing “what could have been” titles.

The X68000 was one of the best home computers for enjoying classic Konami and Capcom arcade games. Its hardware was so powerful that, aside from the Neo Geo, it was virtually the only system capable of delivering near-perfect arcade conversions at the time. Unfortunately, it was extremely expensive and sold exclusively in Japan, so very few people ever had the chance to experience it. Even today, decades after its release, the quality of its games is still incredibly impressive. Ghouls ’n Ghosts is a perfect example. Compared to the Mega Drive and PC Engine versions, the X68000 port is on an entirely different level in terms of accuracy and overall quality. It’s still amazing to think that a game this good could fit on just two floppy disks.

Then Sega introduced higher-resolution arcade games with Virtua Fighter and Virtua Racing, which used 24kHz (496×384). Sega Model 1, 2, and 3 arcade boards are famous for using this resolution. One of the reasons the Sega Saturn versions of Virtua Fighter 2 and Daytona USA looked so different from the arcade versions was because of this resolution gap. Later 3D arcade games moved to 31kHz (640×480) resolution. Sega NAOMI games are one of the best-known examples. That’s why you need to be careful when buying an arcade cabinet. Early cabinets only supported 15kHz, while the commonly seen Astro City supported both 15kHz and 24kHz. There were ports on PlayStation and Saturn, but nothing beat playing them with friends at the arcade. Those moments were the best. These days, with the Neo Geo AES+, it feels like the retro gaming vibe is coming back. I just hope November comes quickly so more people can enjoy it together.

My family couldn’t afford buying brand new games and consoles. My first PlayStation game was a used Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions by HIDEO_KOJIMA that came with a used PlayStation that my Mother was able to afford for me as a gift. That game changed it all for me and shot me into a trajectory of gaming I would have never been on if there was no used consoles and games. I’m thankful for it Imagine now, with digital only games. The young generation of gamers will never have this experience and never be able to afford a used game.

People who started playing games after the PlayStation era probably know the company Konami mainly through titles like Winning Eleven, Metal Gear, and Silent Hill. But Konami was actually a company that created a huge variety of games, from the arcade era of the 1980s all the way through the 16-bit console generation. Their work on 8-bit consoles was especially impressive. Konami did an excellent job of adapting many arcade classics to fit the limited hardware of 8-bit systems. Super Contra is a good example of that. Back then, there was even a saying that you could buy a game just by seeing the Konami logo and you wouldn’t be disappointed. 🎮

When I first saw this game in the arcade, I thought it was similar to OutRun. But instead of running on a fixed circuit, you follow a straight course, which makes racing really fun. It was only released on the Nintendo 64 in North America, so only NA gamers knew about it. It never came out in Asia, and the region code was different, so there was no way to play it back then. Nowadays, you can run it using EverDrive or code-free mods.

These days, X is full of talk about the Neo Geo AES+. The Neo Geo was one of the first systems I started collecting, so it means a lot to me and is still one of the most prized parts of my collection. I’ve always wanted a full 1:1 version—not a mini—that can actually use the original cartridges. I honestly never imagined Neo Geo would come out like this. I just hope more games get released so more people can enjoy it. And yeah, I ordered one too 👌
