The reason I got into game collecting was the Neo Geo MVS arcade system. Around 2005, I came across an arcade game community where modders gathered—people who converted arcade games so they could be played at home on consoles. If I had to pick Capcom’s greatest 2D beat ’em up, my choices would easily be Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara and Alien vs. Predator. Capcom’s original beat ‘em ups are fantastic, but there’s something even more exciting about seeing the company work with iconic licensed franchises. The idea of humans and Predators joining forces to fight the Aliens is simply too good to fail. Everything about this game is top-notch—the graphics, sound, controls, and even its faithful recreation of the atmosphere from the films. It’s a true masterpiece of the genre. Sadly, because of licensing issues, it was never released on home consoles, making it one of Capcom’s most disappointing “what could have been” titles.

My family couldn’t afford buying brand new games and consoles. My first PlayStation game was a used Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions by HIDEO_KOJIMA that came with a used PlayStation that my Mother was able to afford for me as a gift. That game changed it all for me and shot me into a trajectory of gaming I would have never been on if there was no used consoles and games. I’m thankful for it Imagine now, with digital only games. The young generation of gamers will never have this experience and never be able to afford a used game.

People who started playing games after the PlayStation era probably know the company Konami mainly through titles like Winning Eleven, Metal Gear, and Silent Hill. But Konami was actually a company that created a huge variety of games, from the arcade era of the 1980s all the way through the 16-bit console generation. Their work on 8-bit consoles was especially impressive. Konami did an excellent job of adapting many arcade classics to fit the limited hardware of 8-bit systems. Super Contra is a good example of that. Back then, there was even a saying that you could buy a game just by seeing the Konami logo and you wouldn’t be disappointed. 🎮
