Friendly request ... third grade proficiency is not the goal ... Reading begins with the love of books ... I love the video and appreciate the sentiment BTW but I worry about the rhetoric around reading

- and we hear of inspectors saying that there should ONLY be phonically decodable books in reception/Y1 classrooms. The love of books is a great precursor to learning to be a proficient reader.

The New York Post reported, "More than half of 3rd- to 5th-grade students in the Empire State failed their reading proficiency state exams this year, according to shocking new data." Good Lord. According to the New York Post, "Fifth graders saw the largest drop of any grade level, with those students' reading proficiency declining by an incredible 14 points." New York City spends north of $40,000 per student every year to produce that report card. Stephen Miller posted, "Nearly 40% of children in New York State are foreign-born or the children of migrants. Of that group, about 85% are migrants from the third world. No wonder.

Here are some stats about SMHS: Math proficiency: 11% Reading proficiency: 24% Graduation rate: 76% (Not sure how 76% graduate when they can’t read or do math.) But the teachers and administrators think a walkout was a good use of their class time.
