This behaviour is called kleptoparasitism. Red kites were persecuted for centuries and are exceptionally wary of landing on the ground. But by waiting for the highly intelligent, bold magpie to safely feed first, the kite effectively verifies that the food isn't poisoned and that no hidden predators, traps, or...

I love this footage. It’s the game of survival of the fittest out there for our precious wildlife. No Supermarkets or Pet Superstores for wildlife, they have their own rules & implement them in order to stay alive. I’m so thankful for the reintroduction of Red Kites, aren’t they just the most majestic birds. Thank you so much for sharing this. Our local magpies are not going to be happy when our hedgehog feeding station arrives, they turn up every morning to clear up all the bits the hedgehogs left overnight & I worry greatly about cross contamination.

Oh I agree entirely! The reintroduction of Kites was one of a tiny handful of true success stories. I'll never forget the sight, 25 years ago, of a black blob so high in the sky, but with that distinctive forked tail, and being so excited thinking: Kites! Kites have made it down to Hampshire!😍 Don't worry about the magpies - once you have your feeding station you can just chuck the leftovers out for them, when you clean the dishes each morning.😋 That's what I do. All the leftover food from all the pens and feeders go into one dish in the morning, which is then put out for the birds. It's usually the starlings that get there first, of course.😁

Yes, they have already started all over the country. Even here, darling Anya who gave birth here has decided to stay in the winter cabin and has started hibernation already.

A magpie swooped & seized a mouse in my garden last week - they are mini birds of prey Lost a clutch of ducklings in a wild swoop once- they take nestlings- not on good terms with them - though didn't object to mouse seizure!

Aw, they are just trying to live and feed their family, just as we all are.😊 This is so natural, and the reason why animals have a whole brood, as some will make food for other animals. And magpies are such incredibly smart birds. Did you know that they are self aware? They pass the mirror self-recognition test - an ability shared by very few animals outside of great apes, dolphins, elephants, and us humans. And they recognise our faces, and remember who treated them well, or who treated them badly. But what I find so endearing is that not only do they mate for life, they have friends. And their friends help them solve puzzles to get food, and when one dies, all the others gather around the body and make loud, crying calls of grief and mourning. They are very special animals.🥰

It is - they're so much cleverer than we give them credit for. Humans on the other hand - with all their brains and capacity - show themselves frequently to be remarkably stupid.

Have you ever seen the magpies take food and bury it around the garden. Similar to a squirrel, even stamps on gound after to no trace. Not sure if they ever retrieve it again..🤔

😁They are so intelligent! I regularly see a magpie drag a chicken wing I put out for the kites, under a bush, and then check to make sure it can't be seen from the air. 😊

Fascinating. It comes from Klevo meaning theft in Greenk. Used in English words like Kleptomania

Hedgehog Cabin profil fotoğrafı

Yes, almost.😊 In Greek, klevo means thief, whereas kleptes is the verb, meaning to steal (as in kleptomaniac). The term combines the Greek word kleptes with parasitism.

Hedgehogs are great creatures of habit, and will always return to the same spot to hibernate, if they can. Darling Belina has already returned here, to 'her' pen, and is beginning to prepare for hibernation this year. With the prolonged drought conditions forcing trees to drop their fruit and leaves early, and the absence of natural food, the signs and smells of approaching autumn have arrived very prematurely this year, so hedgehogs are likely to enter hibernation early. So now is the ideal time to check any empty hedgehog houses in your garden, to ensure they are still weatherproof, and give them a good clean out. Please always use the stick test first, to make absolutely sure the house doesn't have a resident (see below). Once the houses are completely dry, line them with newspaper and stuff them full to the brim with clean dry hay. Then poke your hand inside the hay, through the doorway, and flatten down an area, to make an inviting cosy nest. (scroll to the bottom of this website page to see a How-To video of making up a house: Don't worry if the house already has a resident. Just fill a large flowerpot or bucket with fresh hay and lie it on its side, next to the house, so the resident can help themselves to clean sheets.😊 Hedgehogs build 2, sometime 3 hibernation nests, just in case their chosen nest becomes endangered or flooded. This forward-thinking means they always have a safe warm ready-made shelter to move straight into, at a time when dry nesting material would be impossible to find, and they wouldn't have the energy to build. Isn't that clever? Belina's history:

This is the pen of Leah, the morning after her first night's sleep here. Every black dot you see is a tick. They are black because they're full of her blood, and growing. (This is one of the reasons why I have only white bedding and floor coverings. If she was in newspaper you'd never see this). Poor little Leah is absolutely smothered in hundreds of ticks, and has fleas, too. Despite the old wives' tale, it's very rare for a hedgehog to have fleas. So rare in fact, that a professor of entomology who studies these sorts of things pays me £20 a go when I send him fleas. Additionally, hedgehog fleas are species-specific, so they can't infest or live on any other animal. A hedgehog has to be seriously ill or incredibly weak to attract ectoparasites such as ticks and fleas. And poor Leah is that weak - she is suffering from starvation, AND she has just given birth. A couple clearing out their shed found poor little Leah huddled with her babies in a pile of blankets, where she'd given birth. They live in army barracks, and their garden is tiny, with no suitable hedgehog habitat. Everywhere is kept 'neat'. Despite this, somehow Leah survived. With a shed substituting for a hedgerow and army blankets instead of leaves and moss, Leah managed to make a maternity nest and have her precious babies. But with no food, she was unable to produce enough milk to feed them, and one by one, the babies died. By the time she was found, out of the 7 babies she had given birth to, only 3 were still alive. I saw the bodies so could tell how many days they had survived. The lovely finders had no idea that things were so desperate for our hedgehogs, and that the dramatic decline in insects, due to the way we are 'tidying' our gardens, meant that they are now suffering starvation. Hedgehogs don't eat slugs and snails, they eat beetles and catapillars. Caterpillars make up almost half a hedgehog's diet, and their emergence is perfectly timed with peak baby season, the time of most need. We're in June, peak butterfly time, but how many have you seen lately? Like most people, the finders were completely unaware of how our bad destructive habits are impacting our precious wildlife, until seeing it with their own eyes. They are now committed to improving not just their garden, but the whole Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst, and went home armed with leaflets and kitten biscuits and determination. Meanwhile poor tick infested Leah and her 3 surviving babies are safe and warm here, and she's getting good nourishment and care. It's so important these tiny 5 day old babies don't fall victim to the ticks, as they would not survive. I can't use drugs or chemicals as Leah is far too weak and her babies far too vulnerable. So it's just a matter of cleaning her out every day - the very last thing to be subjecting a new mum to. Despite all her hardship, and me meddling, she's a wonderful mum and doing her best to nurture her sweet babies. Last night, her first night here, she ate an entire dish of special Mother and Baby food - enough normally for 2 or 3 hedgehogs. The sight of that empty dish absolutely broke me. It's too early for a prognosis on Leah and the babies, but already, because of them, her little part of the world is going to become more hedgehog-friendly.
