This clip perfectly encapsulates the issues plaguing modern Ubisoft writing. When the literal writer is oblivious to how much worse the new writing is compared to the old, it shows a complete lack of quality control. Nobody internally has the authority or the standards to stand up and say...

Great stuff! I'd love to see you talk about these issues in videos though. You have a very close relationship with ubisoft, and they value what you say more than most people, especially with all the interviews and opportunities :)

@TheHiddenOneAC This is not true and I still cover these subjects, just don't like to have them be the only topic of a video.

Do we have actual video of the writer speaking on this? This is very damming if true. I was hoping it was an added late into development issue. The fact the writers thought they were actually doing a good jobs means that the ubi writing team needs a power washing top to bottom

Its from the many BFR preview events that many people, even myself attended. I believe what he said is true because even at the preview event I went to which was different to Luke's, I recall a similar situation happening but with someone asking about cutscene quality and one of the ubisoft devs seemed taken back by the opinion.

It's funny because I didn't have much of a problem with these missions, they were ok, but I noticed that they weren't familiar to me (I hadn't consumed this games content since it came out) and knew immediately that they were new missions.

I hate advocating for people to lose they jobs but anyone that’s involved with anything to do with writing in the newer ACs should all be fired cause they are so bad and they couldn’t even see how garbage they’re trash compared to the OG, they have no talent or comprehension

Couldn’t have been said any better. My only big gripe with BFR is just how obviously out of place the new content is. Even the random quips from Edward when you walk near something feels a little off

If I had to guess I’d say they have a major culture problem, where nobody feels safe saying something is shit, particularly to their seniors (and that this culture likely encourages the opposite ie encourages saying “it’s sooo amazing” with excited superlatives…even when you think it’s trash). This is also a symptom of the massive size of these studios, smaller studios can run much more organisationally flat. I’m a co founder and art lead, and no one in my team from either the social or production side has any issue with saying something I do is crap or suggesting alternatives. That simply doesn’t sound like it’s happening at many of these studios. Plus they keep the games super secret for like 6 years so the broader public can’t weigh in until it’s far far too late for any criticism to be addressed.

With the exception of key Ubisoft writers, it seems what usually happens is. 1. Less subtext (feels on the nose) 2. Less investment (which numbs interesting twists or revelations.)

U should see how they treat Rainbow Six Siege. You only need to boot up the game and you have like 4 long standing bugs in the main menu alone (months, years even). There is no qa at Ubisoft, you cant tell me devs play their games and do not see this.

It's the culture of positivity nowadays where everyone has the feeling they can't say nothing cause it hurts another, always saying "ohh that's really great but I think it needs to feel less stiff" and the receiving end l, ends up it thinking it's really good and adds to it

The quality of the new stuff really just varies wildly. I liked a lot of the new gameplay dialogues that trigger during exploration, and I thought the stuff with Bernard was good enough, but the officer stuff felt like a random sidequest in a 200 hour rpg.

It's widespread across ALL creative fields Modern creatives no longer draw from the same sources & the same canon. That's why modern writing is terrible HR runs their company, yes. But it's more like HR dominated the social media algorithms which govern their sense of good/bad

This is what happens when writers are surrounded by "yes-men". If nobody is there to criticise your work, you'll most likely never make anything worth sharing.

Ubi game directors should have way more power should be able to cut and remake anything at anytime like movie directors. From JorRaptor's interview I felt like Resynced's director did not have any real power. What do you mean you have to ask your animators before making a change?

Yeah this is what happens when you build a society based on positivity and brand any negativity as toxic or worse. Absolute shambles.

I really wanna know what's happening inside of Ubisoft because this feels like there are some higher ups who are power tripping and people are scared of losing their jobs (which can still happen if the game is a success)

Does anyone know if they ever considered adding back in the cut content with Mary Read? To this day, it still feels like there is a portion missing from the story.

I feel like you are catching up to what a lot of people have been saying for years under the term “woke”. A different term would be outcome focused writing rather than character / setting dependent writing. It’s putting modern sensibilities or an intended outcome to the dialogue

Mind you, they want to expand on this version of Edward in the future. If that happens, Edward James Kenway is going to be butchered.

The new Halo has a new missions just like this bullshit. Do they all just gather around and agree to do this shit together? It's suspicious as hell, but then again, they all live in the same bubble. That's all they know.

There were critical reviewers at Ubisoft. The leadership was just more interested in promoting ideological propaganda messaging than maintaining continuity and narrative consistency. Look at who left the project when Assassin’s Creed deviated from its original vision more than a decade ago.

At first everyone was glazing this game and now people are being honest... I pre purchased it and refunded once I saw the "new things". Why would I play something which I already have played before and that version is pretty much flawless. People were acting like resynced is so good, maybe it is or is it nostalgia? I mean obviously it is going to be good because the og game was. I get that this doesn't mean every remake is inferior but what are the "new additions"? What did they improve in this? I still see that same fckass engine, that same gameplay, ui and same procedurally generated cutscenes as compared to the other rpg games... Imo resynced is pure cashgrab man. Not worth at full price. If it didn't had any predecessor then it would've made sense but right now. No!!!. I seriously hope they change the gameplay in Hexe like actually change it. I've had my fair share of fun in rpg ones as well, I don't want those engines for the remakes.

It's that toxic positivity again huh, it's a fear based culture now where everyone is afraid to be honest for fear of a visit by HR or being outright cancelled. Even watching the extras on Disney animations during the 90's renaissance & they talk about how much they argued!

Jesus Christ 🤦 I really hope the writer has been told to react this way, and deep down understands the difference in quality, because if they genuinely believe the new content is on par with the original they’re delusional.

It should be a requirement to the writters to at least play 2 h of cinematics and ingame interactions of previous titles just to reference, I mean c'mon this basically Is confirming that current Ubi dont know their own legacy or talk to old writters to WRITE BETTER

I still fondly remember how they had a clear vision for Ghost Recon Breakpoints story expansions moving forward with the sentient AI business only for the writers to change mid development which gave us an incoherent mess ontop of an already pretty mid shooter experience.

Watch this game-changing dissertation on "expert writing." Expert writers write to "think" about the world. 99% of experts write and think at the same time. They use the writing process to help themselves think. This is how they do their best thinking. Write to think about the world. Do this because you care, because you want to be part of progress, because you want to make a dent in the universe. Write to inspire and influence. And when you are finished writing, and you click publish, think about your work this way... the intent of your text is to cause readers to change the way they think about the world. Engagement metrics don't really matter in comparison. Whether or not your text is valuable, depends on whether or not your readers perceive that you have valuably changed what they think, or what they do, or how they decide. One of the reasons it's so hard for smart people to write well is because they don't write to change the way people think about the world. They write to complete a project, to earn a grade, to be assessed. Or they write to publish *their* thoughts without going through a mental and soulful exercise of writing to think about the world, without writing to change how people think about the world. Write to think about the world. Change how people think about the world. In an era of #GenerativeAI, content isn't the end game. Your goal isn't just to get someone's attention, generate reactions, or show up in search. Your mission is to change how people think about the world. Change How People Think About the World. Thank you, Larry McEnerney (now-retired former Director of the University of Chicago's Writing Program).

Announcing: Writing Examples Today is launch day! We built this website to celebrate great writing. It’s 100% free. Each article deconstructs a piece of writing from an iconic writer. The goal is to give you X-Ray vision into what makes sentences and paragraphs come alive (so that you can improve at your craft). Every example has an analysis of why the writing works. Analytical often means dry. But instead of going technical, we’ve gone technicolor. There are text-explainers, summary graphics, and videos that come together to make the writing instruction lively and multi-dimensional. It’s a place where you can discover how great writing comes together. Where we lift up the hood and see the mechanics in action. It isn’t about giving you a set of rules to follow. It’s about showing the diversity of ways writers approach their craft, so you can develop your own style. What are some of the articles about? You’ll learn how to describe a party like F. Scott Fitzgerald, how to tell a story like George Orwell, how to write a speech like John F. Kennedy. There are other articles inspired by the likes of John Steinbeck, James Clear, Winston Churchill, Edgar Allen Poe, Charles Dickens, Steven Pressfield, and Jerry Seinfeld. Writing Examples is a crusade against the sterility of contemporary writing. So much of the advice you read says the same thing: “Be direct. Cut the fluff. Get to the point. Stick to short sentences.” And yeah, sure, this advice has merit. It’s useful in certain cases, but the problem is writers take these rules to be universal, which has homogenized writing styles. Even in my own writing, there’ve been so many times where I’ve stripped away my own voice in the name of “correctness.” I regret that. The truth is, there is no one way to write well, just as there is no one way to speak well. The way you speak in a boardroom is different from the way you speak on a first date, which is different from the way you speak with your childhood best friends. Writing is similar. Writing Examples is the opposite of Grammarly. It celebrates the wild, wacky, and the weird because it’s the bedrock of personality. The site’s explicit purpose is to inject some High Noon Chutzpah back into the world of writing. To teach you how to write with distinctly human fingerprints in a world that’s about to be flooded with AI-generated content. Forget playing it safe. That’s the most dangerous thing you can do in a world of instant writing. I want you to write with personality. I want you to play with punctuation. I want you to ditch the corporatized hogwash. I want to expand your sense of what great writing can be. And I want you to have fun doing it. But there’s more to the mission. Writing Examples is a protest against today’s Internet, where people spend the majority of their time reading ad-polluted articles and doom-scrolling the same few social media sites. Remember when we used to surf the Internet? When every site was its own wave to ride? Now, we’re like phone-addicted zombies, we mindlessly scroll Twitter, TikTok, LinkedIn, Facebook, or Instagram until we feel bad about ourselves — only to repeat the cycle a few hours later. Writing Examples is different. Heartfelt writing deserves a heartfelt presentation, so every element of the site has been designed from scratch. Energetically, we wanted to honor the gravitas of classic writing without the sleepiness of a drab old library shelf. We said no to ads. We said no to pop-ups. No hijacking your attention. None of the flat white backgrounds that make the Internet feel so homogenous. And we said no to anything that feels like your 5th-grade English class. Writing Examples isn’t about what’s trending. It’s about learning from the great writers of times past, most of whom you know, many of whom you probably haven’t taken the time to read. The ultimate goal is to make Writing Examples a one-stop shop to learn about any kind of writing you can think of. Now, I dare you to dive into the site and get to work.
