I came across this old Ubisoft video about Studio Alice, and it explains so much as to why writing quality and standards have completely declined from back then to now. So basically, Ubisoft back in the day during their prime era created an entire internal group to improve the quality of their writing. Writers would bring in their scripts to get another set of eyes on them, and then have problems pointed out, and actually be challenged when something wasn't working. Corey May in this video talks about how important it was for writers to have somewhere to go for HONEST feedback. He talks about when he was writing games himself, there were times where he had nobody to turn to for help or guidance. Nobody to look at his work and tell him what they thought. Studio Alice was partly his attempt to give the writers the support system he wished he had. He says writers would come to him and basically say, "I need your help. I would love it if I could show you my work and you could tell me what you think of it." What is said at 4:57 literally describes the current state of Ubisoft writing quality. Lowkey, she kinda foreshadowed today's Ubisoft. I find this so funny because watching this video after my tweet about the Ubisoft writer seemingly being oblivious to how much worse the new Black Flag Resynced writing feels compared to the old really puts things into perspective.

A good quick summary of my approach to writing. If I can't write something I feel great about in 5-10 minutes, I just throw it away and start over. I don't try to massage the bad into the good, I erase the bad to make way for something better to emerge. For me, throwing it away is faster, and the outcome better, than trying to recover a piece of writing that isn't headed where I want it.

Watch this game-changing dissertation on "expert writing." Expert writers write to "think" about the world. 99% of experts write and think at the same time. They use the writing process to help themselves think. This is how they do their best thinking. Write to think about the world. Do this because you care, because you want to be part of progress, because you want to make a dent in the universe. Write to inspire and influence. And when you are finished writing, and you click publish, think about your work this way... the intent of your text is to cause readers to change the way they think about the world. Engagement metrics don't really matter in comparison. The way you speak in a boardroom is different from the way you speak on a first date, which is different from the way you speak with your childhood best friends. Writing is similar. Writing Examples is the opposite of Grammarly. It celebrates the wild, wacky, and the weird because it’s the bedrock of personality. The site’s explicit purpose is to inject some High Noon Chutzpah back into the world of writing. To teach you how to write with distinctly human fingerprints in a world that’s about to be flooded with AI-generated content. Forget playing it safe. That’s the most dangerous thing you can do in a world of instant writing. I want you to write with personality. I want you to play with punctuation. I want you to ditch the corporatized hogwash.
