Did you watch the game or just this play? IU was trying to run out the clock by doing slow knees and the refs blew the play dead before the QB took a knee 3 times in a row. IU coach was livid, but since Iowa kept calling time out they couldn’t run out the clock. So he instructed the QB to sprint backwards to make sure Iowa didn’t get the ball back at all.

You are forgetting the officials were blowing the plays dead before IU QB kneeled in the victory formation and Iowa was calling timeouts. If officials were doing their job, then you would have a point. Since they weren’t, IU need to make sure Iowa didn’t get ball back with time.

On last play of a period, unlike other plays, a play which results in a turnover, a personal foul or unsportsmanlike conduct gives the defense both the penalty *and* the result of the play.
