Have a look at one of the greatest examples of industrial engineering art ever created. This is the rotor assembly of the Ansaldo Energia GT36, one of the most advanced heavy-duty gas turbines ever developed. What looks like a collection of polished metal blades is actually the result of 3.7 million hours of engineering, combining decades of research in aerodynamics, combustion, metallurgy, cooling systems and precision manufacturing. A gas turbine works by compressing enormous volumes of air, mixing it with fuel, burning it at extreme temperatures, and extracting energy from the expanding gases through multiple turbine stages. That is why no two blade rows look the same. Across this rotor assembly, the colours, shapes and surface finishes constantly change because each section is solving a different problem. Some blades are designed to move and control massive airflow volumes, while others must survive the most extreme environment inside the machine. The most advanced turbine blades contain microscopic internal cooling channels. The cooling does not come from room-temperature air. Compressed air extracted from the compressor section already heated to 650 degrees Celsius, is redirected through passages inside the blade. It then exits through thousands of tiny holes, creating a thin protective cooling film in real time 24/7 over the surface of the blades while the surrounding combustion gases exceed 1,500°C all while rotating at 3000 RPM. As the CFM LEAP engine shuts down, you can hear the distinctive “whoosh” sound followed by a gush of air. That is the Reverse Bleed System (RBS) at work. During normal operation, a significant amount of fuel remains unpurged in the system after engine shutdown. This residual fuel, located near or within the hot section, vaporizes due to high temperatures and deposits carbon (coke) on the fuel nozzles. Over time, nozzle coking leads to several operational and maintenance issues, including loss of thrust, reduced engine efficiency due to incomplete combustion, accelerated deterioration of hot-section components (combustor and High-Pressure Turbine), engine start failures, potential engine stalls, and increased unscheduled engine removals. The Reverse Bleed System (RBS) prevents fuel nozzle coking by automatically introducing cool air from the core compartment into the engine core flowpath after shutdown. This effectively lowers the fuel nozzle temperature below the coking threshold. Unlike any existing engine, it's efficient at every speed. Because it's efficient at every speed, we can use it in a new way: as the first stage of an orbital launch vehicle. The resulting platform will get payloads to orbit dramatically cheaper than all-rocket systems - among many possible applications. The key insight is to use electric motors to drive a compressor. That way we can make it spin at any speed, allowing it to "adapt" to it's airspeed and combustion cycle. One of the coolest parts: the video below is of a demonstrator my team and I built last year. We already have a new engine with 10x the thrust that will be complete next month.

Why do we clean the core of our engines when the planes are flying through the rain? Shouldn’t the rainwater be enough? Many people believe that rain naturally cleans aircraft engines during flight. However, this is not true. Although rainwater does enter the engine intake, it is mostly thrown outward by centrifugal force in the compressor section. The rotating blades cause the water droplets to move toward the outer casing of the engine, where they are drained away and do not reach the internal gas path where dirt and deposits accumulate. It removes deposits like dust, soot, oil, and salt that build up during operation. Good news on the jet engine project ✅: I redesigned the exhaust system again to prioritize cooling, thrust & the afterburner sequence all together, it now works better✅, no red hot situation on the exhaust at all✅ The new design also reduces pressure on the turbine on AB mode✅ This test was done with gas for the main engine running at 50% power, then liquid kerosene for the AB🔥. I wish to change the fuel nozzles on the main burner to a more powerful one next week, then we'll do this test again close to 100% power which will be louder & much more violent ⚡️ After that, we'll go straight to a runway & let this beast run🚀 #Zedora #madeinEbonyi 🇳🇬
