We had a similar issue with my grandfathers ashes, he loved walking so my mum asked us to all line up and sprinkled the remaining ashes on the toes of our shoes so he would always walk with us 😊 I’d pick a spot he loved and place the extra ashes there 😊👍

Maybe inter the box deeper into the ground, scatter remaining ashes on top of the box place lid over the entire hole. I hope that makes sense.

Bless you Martin, I would scatter the remaining ashes in a place they loved. I knew someone who scattered ashes on a windy day and was absolutely covered after upturning the urn. She had to walk back to the car covered in ash, drive home to shower. . The love was there though❤️

I'd say do the majority with your mum's remains and the last few ounces, go to a place locally he loved, or is special to both of you and scatter them there and fondly remember those times. :)
