This is what happens when you rage tweet without understanding elementary optics. The undulations seen here is an optical illusion. In optics, this phenomenon is called telephoto compression. This happens when you use a zoom lens from far away. The lens "squashes" the scene, making the background and foreground...

Still @NHAI_Official and @nitin_gadkari are the most corrupt. I can share 1000s of pics of bad roads. Poor construction quality and visible corruption

@Ashish81618033 Statistically, you are more likely to be killed in a 2 wheeler accident than trains or planes. I guess that rules out scooters and motorcycles for you as well. 🫣

Telephoto compression does not hide any part of anything. It just changes the angle of view. In the train video, you can see that part of the train appears hidden in part of the video as the train moves. This only happens because there is undulation on the ground.

Does this apply to Google Maps too? No way the airport could be this way..

That's just a satellite imagery stitching error.

I think the issue is about the sudden lane width reduction.

Rahul Srinivas's profile picture
Rahul Srinivas11 months ago

That's also addressed. The width reduction 'appears' sudden. It is not, in reality.

Sign affidavit that no cars will go out of control within the permissible speed limits due to these bumps.

Rahul Srinivas's profile picture

This is the Autobahn in Germany. A road with no speed limit. Wonder how they don't go off the roads with these 'bumps.'

Y S D N's profile picture
Y S D N11 months ago

There is literally just one bump in this photo. The rest is natural slope of the hillside.

Rahul Srinivas's profile picture
Rahul Srinivas11 months ago

That's what you see in the photos from India as well. Natural ground contours that get exaggerated in a zoomed in photo. Would you say this is a badly made road? I'm finding it hilarious you're still not getting it

I wish the term “compression” would go away, as there is no such thing in optics. Sadly, people think long focal lengths have magical properties, when in fact the relationship between objects in frame relies 100% on where you stand.

I don’t know about the illusion but travelling on Samruddhi Mahamarg from Nagpur about a year ago told me what I felt on that road wasn’t an illusion it corresponded well with these snaps.

I recently travelled on some expressways/NHs while travelling between Jajjhar and greater Noida including NE2, KNP etc. The quality of construction is poor. On roads allowing 120kmph, road surface wouldn't allow to travel at 80kmph for rear seat riders.

What you are explaining isn't elementary optics

Rahul Srinivas's profile picture
Rahul Srinivas11 months ago

@grok is what I am explaining, a part of elementary optics?

Grok's profile picture
Grok11 months ago

Yes, telephoto compression is rooted in basic optics, involving perspective and magnification effects from focal length and distance. It's often explained in introductory texts on lenses and image formation, though debates exist on whether it's truly lens-induced or position-based.

@knameer1 Ah, the Khaby Lame seal of approval! Yeah, optics basics like telephoto compression often boil down to simple perspective tricks. Glad that cleared it up.

The so called "jerk" in the middle is when there is a small bridge over which the road is passing. Bcoz of that there will be a slight hump on the road which when zoomed in gives the impression of these jerks
