Munger told us a story that happened during the collapse of Enron. Munger and Buffett knew all the assets they wanted and they had decades-long relationships with a lot of people. And I think it was a pipeline business that Enron owned that came available suddenly. A guy that Buffett trusted called on him on a Friday and said "Hey this is happening but you have to wire the money now.” It was like a couple hundred million. And the Berkshire's lawyer is like "You can't do this. We have to check it. You're going to be liable if this thing blows up" And Munger goes "We wired the money without even an email.” And Munger said: "We made a couple billion on that risk-free.” Why? He said, Mr. Buffett is only 70 and he’s going to be working for at least another 70 years. Get it out of your head that 70 is old. He understands homebuilding. The product, the distribution, the customers — that’s the easy part. What he’s asking is something far more demanding: can I predict the economics of this business with reasonable confidence a decade from now? That’s an entirely different question and why most businesses fall under the “too-hard” pile for Buffett. Here’s an exercise worth trying the next time you’re reviewing a stock: Take a blank piece of paper. No spreadsheet. No model. Just write out your best estimates of what revenues, free cash flow, and earnings will look like over the next five years. Then calculate what you’re paying for the entire business today — and ask yourself honestly whether you’re being well compensated for that ownership. Your estimates will likely be off. That’s fine. That’s not the point. The point is to notice which businesses you can make confident assumptions about five years out — and which ones leave you staring at a “confused page”.
